SAD Lights - Let The Sunlight Shine
Ranked #7,100 in Healthy Living, #124,979 overall
Fight the winter blues with natural light lamps
Get ready for shorter days with SAD lights. Scientists have been looking into SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, for more than 20 years, and special lights like the NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Therapy Lamp are among the products developed to give people a convenient source of simulated sunlight at home.
Sunlight therapy lamps to alleviate SAD have their fans among people who have felt depressed, moody or listless in the winter months, sometimes for years.
Lights with a spectrum of wave lengths, similar to what the sun produces naturally, are also called light therapy lights. Natural spectrum lights simulate daylight. Strong lights at 10,000 lux create brilliant lighting.
Many people report that their mood improves, and their cravings for high-carbohydrate foods dissipate, by using these lights for about 30 minutes a day during the season when they would otherwise get limited exposure to natural sunlight.

What is SAD?
Seasonal affective disorder
SAD is related to the hormone melatonin, which helps the body regulate sleep and moods. It is produced during dark hours, so the body makes more of it when we get less sunlight. December, January and February are the months when SAD is most prevalent. Women are four times more likely to feel this condition.
Some of my friends and relatives in the Northern Europe really feel these symptoms. While Michigan is at 41 to 48 degrees north latitude, the UK is at 51 degrees and higher, comparable to Newfoundland in Canada. The sun goes down around 4 pm in the afternoon near the winter solstice and in London they get less than 8 hours of daylight on Dec. 21.
Ireland spans similar high latitudes, and has short winter days with little sun. The first time I went there was January a few years ago. When the sun came up around 9 am, it seemed to creep up, and the same when it went down. We get lots of clouds around the Great Lakes, so gloomy winter weather is nothing new. But this was far more pronounced.
SAD lights in all shapes and sizes
Place the lighting where you will use it
Fit the lighting into your lifestyle
These lamps come in many variations. There are versions that look more like office desk lamps, so that you can fit the lamp into the purpose and décor of the room where you will want to use it.I have my extra lights in my office, and it helps me work more efficiently on long winter nights to turn them on.
SAD floor lamps that offer full spectrum lighting are also available. These are useful for reading and stitching as well. When I was doing counted cross stitch, I used a light like this to help me see the fine linen threads and the colors accurately.
Daylight light bulbs
Try in your existing lamps
I especially like this kind of light bulb for work at night, and for photography.

- I don't have a SAD light (I'm looking into getting one) but I do use a wake up light. I've been using it for about a month now and it is SOOO much easier to get up in the morning. I think that using a SAD light might help with the "winter blues" I tend to get.

- I didn't know you could get these, but I really hate these short winter days, when you go to work and then come home in the dark. It does make you miserable and I am sure SAD has a real basis.

- Yes, I've used one for the last ten years or more. They really do help, but not as much as a winter holiday in the sun.

- I use them year-round, not to improve my mood since I live in Florida and have plenty of sunshine, but because I like the full-spectrum light and so do my house plants. Great lens, thumbs up! And thank you for blessing my house plants lens - you made my day!! :)

- I think my grandmother might have had this. Mom says grandma had trouble with depression in winter. It is nice these lights are available for those who need them. I bet some D3 would be a nice partner to this therapy as well.

However, winter affective disorder is serious and thanks for the thumbs up lens

- Great article on this disorder. SAD also occurs on cloudy days and days that the sun just doesn't shine. I imagine that winter time would be the worse. Great job. Blessed by a SquidAngel. You will be featured on Home and Garden SquidAngel.

- Outdoor exercise helps this condition - also - Make sure your diet includes foods containing the B vitamins thiamin and niacin, folate, selenium and oily fish (for the omega-3) - often called "mood foods." Some studies suggest they may help relieve depressive symptoms.

- Where we live in Florida, the light makes colors look more intense. Sound like the daylight light bulbs similarly "light" up your workspace.

- You know, I've never used these types of lights as, not to make light of it, but having moved from Cleveland Ohio to Florida has surely been enlightening and inspiring to my soul. It seemed I heard that in Cleveland and Northeastern Ohio that is it overcast or not so sunny about 85-88% of the time? Good to know that we have these type of lights!

- I'm sure the Florida sunshine is very enjoyable!
In cloudy locations like the Great Lakes, lighting does make a difference. Also in northern Europe and Canada.
