Rockabilly Meet Surf Rock with SCOTS

If you've ever laughed at one of those lists of redneck, hillbilly, or trailer trash traits, Southern Culture on the Skids is right up your alley. Explore their raucous style and humor, from their 50s-inspired surf instrumentals to their biting redneck commentary and own brand of swamp-rock. SCOTS, as they are often called, has cornered the market on hillbilly satire. Truly, the name Southern Culture on the Skids says it all.

Self-Mockery Works for Southern Culture on the Skids

With a love song that suggests you "put your teeth up on the windowsill," a tribute to a woman who is "liquored up and laquered down, she's got the biggest hair in town," and a celebration of the fact that "My House Has Wheels," you know that Rick Miller, Mary Huff, Dave Hartman, and Chris Bess (among the others who have come and gone from the band, like original lead singer Stan Lewis) aren't taking their Southern heritage too seriously.

Once you've heard their take on living in the Deep South (and read the lyrics for Camel Walk), try their version of surf rock instrumentals. Take a look at their Zombified album dedicated to the undead. Listen to their Mexican wrestling tribute, Santo Swings. Discover the whole lotta things they want to do.

Then visit the band's official SCOTS website and find a jukebox, videos, tour dates, a discussion forum, and lots of other "countrypolitan" stuff. According to one press release, 'the band describes their sound as "toe sucking geek rock - kinda weird, but it feels good when you're doing it".' How can you resist a description like that?

Put your teeth up on the window sill, settle back with some banana pudding, and listen to the band (and download "My House Has Wheels" for free) on their LastFM profile page. You can also read a lengthy profile of the band at MTV.
