SEO Tip Of The Day

New Optimization, Design, and Marketing Tips Every Day

March 6, 2009

Some Quick SEO E-commerce optimization tips to help your e-commerce site:

1. Do extensive keyword research for your market looking closely at industry, niche and competitor terms. Some business get too caught up in their brand and their branding terms and that is not necessarily what is being searched for by users.

2. Create a clear navigation system that does not use flash or JavaScript based. Creating a site with a drill-down schematic is very effective. An example would be: Shop > Clothing > Women's Clothing > Tops > Product.

3. To drive visitors to a product begins with having a keyword-rich product page. Too many times have I seen a 1 sentence description for products-it is ineffective and a waste of a perfectly good landing page. Having an 'expert' review or letting customers rate a product adds more content and helps build the product reputation.

4. Cross-linking (or selling) items help with page indexation and helps customers navigation through the site.

5. A few other SEO Tips: Sitemap, XML Sitemap, Search function and Shopping feeds.

What is SEO and SEM?

What is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a web site's user-traffic, quality, volume, and rank on a search engine. This is inclusive of pages found with natural, algorithmic, and organic search methods. SEO efforts might involve the way a site is coded, its presentation, content, links, and or structure. It could also include fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from viewing or "crawling" the site. Ranking depends on many specialized factors. The two most significant ones are keyword relevancy and content optimization.

Some Basic SEO Techniques:

* Create keyword lists for content and metadata.
* Create and optimize content for users, search engines, and humans.
* Build your links externally and internally.
* Analyze competitors.
* Research and continue to optimize.

What is SEM (Search Engine Marketing) ?

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a form of internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs). SEM methods include: search engine optimization (or SEO), paid placement, paid inclusion, RSS feeds, newsletters, shopping feed[Keywords]s, and social media forums such as blogs.

Easy-Peasy Robot.Txt File

Robot.txt Validation

Robot.txt refers to a simple text file which includes the "robots.txt" naming
tag. It is placed in the root directory of a web site. An example of
its naming-location would be www.domain.com/robots.txt. This
file is used to validate and optimize the web site, and it includes
instructions for which areas to index and what areas of the site to
exclude. Areas to exclude may include areas of the site that may not be
setup correctly.You can only have one robot.txt file on your site and
it has to be placed in the root directory.

* Incorrect: www.domain.com/subdirectory/robots.txt
* Correct: www.domain.com/robots.txt

All major search engine spiders look for and utilize the robots.txt file.
If pages need to be restricted from users the files should be placed in
a protected directory, rather than listing individual files within the
robots.txt file. A robot.txt file contains two operative statements:
User-agent and Disallow.

User-agent: tells the spider if they are allowed or disallowed on parts of the site. You
can use an asterisk when you are referring to all spiders, or you can
name a particular spider. (See Fig. 1 for all Spider Agents).

The code below tells all robots (user agents) to go anywhere on the site and disallow nothing:

* User-agent: *
* Disallow:

The code below tells the Googlebot agent not to crawl any file on the site:

Disallow: Specifies what files are off-limits to the spider- filenames and directories can be specified. Using a "/ "disallows all files.

The code below lets any spider crawl the site but disallows them into the image files and cgi-bin :

* User-agent: *
* Disallow: /cgi-bin
* Disallow: /images
