Looking for a cost-effective way to climb up Google's rankings? It's easier and more fun than you think. Getting great search engine optimization results via social media follows many of the same principles of traditional link building. Not familiar with link building? Not a problem. We'll tell you everything you need to know in this Squidoo lens.

Using Social Networks to Build Valuable Links

Think Social Media can't Give Your Search Rankings a Boost? Think Again.

If you're like most businesses with an online presence, you've probably registered up a LinkedIn account. Maybe you've even set up a Facebook page, a blog and a Twitter account. But are you really doing all you can to harness the power of social media? Have you been able to use the diverse array of Web 2.0 sites to drive traffic to your site? If you haven't then you're missing out on one of the most effective-and most fun-ways of getting people to visit your Website. You need to create buzz.

Why do you need buzz? Because incoming links-also known as "inbound links" or "external links"-are crucial to your Website's search rankings. These are simply other Websites that link to you. An external links could come from a blog on Wordpress; from a story on Digg; from a group on Facebook. There really is no shortage of social networking sites that

The way Google sees it, the more external Websites that link to your site, the better. So the more incoming links you have, the higher you'll rank in Google, right? Well, it's not quite that simple. Google also takes into account an incoming link's "authority" and its "relevance." Quite simply, a Website that has authority and relevance is a site that has proven itself useful and popular in some way. That means that Digg, currently one of the most popular content-sharing sites, has more authority than a new content-sharing site that just sprang up last month and boasts fewer visitors.

And while getting an incoming link from those burgeoning, less-popular sites certainly won't hurt, the only effective way to generate buzz is to get links from the most popular social networking sites. If Digg, Facebook, StumbleUpon and others aren't part of your social networking plan, then you won't see results.

Your goals should revolve around getting "dug" on Digg, gaining fans on Facebook and getting lots "thumbs up" votes on StumbleUpon. How do you do that? By creating great content. Great content is something that people are drawn to. It's something with a target audience in mind. It could be an easy-to-understand guide, a series of well-thought out tips, or an engaging video.

Usually sporting something like "share this," these buttons let users vote for your contend on their social network of choice. Whether they click to dig a story on Digg, spin it on Sphinn or Tweet it Twitter, users can easily share your content with a simple button click.
  • Become a Valued User - Don't just submit something every few months or so. That will hurt your overall authority withing each social networking site. The time you put into becoming a valued member of the online community could pay in the long run. Build up a list of friends and foster a large personal network. It'll let people learn a lot more about you in just a few seconds.
