Sony Ericsson w200i Review

Sony Ericsson's W200i is a low priced entry level phone in the Walkman series and is similar in design to a few others in the same line. I purchased it for $99 AU dollars, which is in my opinion very well worth it. I know my friend is so jealous I got this phone because his is a Samsung, cost more but doesn't have half the features this baby has. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. I have a weakness for good design and being a designer myself it made sense I'd be more design conscious than other people. I got the white and blue coloured one which was one of the two on sale at the Post office (yes I bought it from the post office!). Surprisingly, this phone is apparently discontinued according to other mobile selling vendors, I guess the post office is the place to get the deals now haha.

All The Features You Need

For anyone looking for a budget phone but still likes the idea of having the packed features of more expensive phone this is the one for you. Major features included that sparked my interest are:

- fm radio
- mp3 player
- Stopwatch, timer, calculator, notes, calendar
- Camera, video
- USB cable transfer
- Flash support
- Good battery life

This is pretty much anything you'd need in a phone. And for people complaining that it has a crappy camera and video camera, well gee it's a phone people! If you want to take good pictures, use your digital camera!

Some people will not like the fact that it doesn't use Bluetooth, but seriously unless you're a serious phone junkie, you don't need it. It's perhaps 5 seconds of inconvenience in exchange for a low price tag.

So just there any negatives?

Ok so how about the negatives. Well, like anything in the world, nothing's perfect. For me, this one has only a few small things that I guess could be a 'negative' if you like to think of it as so. One thing is that my last phone was a flip phone but this one is so small, it's actually smaller than my flip phone opened out. Because it's so small, it can be a tiny bit annoying to use if you're trying to work the buttons upside down, like if you're lying in bed. Even with my tiny hands, it's a tad uncomfortable. Not a major deal but something I've noticed.

One plug

Another thing is that it uses the same plug for 3 different things: USB, adapter and headphones. The headphone plug is actually 2 plugs; one so it fits the phone and another that is actually the normal headphones plug. This can be a bit annoying when you're out and have the headphones on. It feels like you have more wires and stuff on you than usual. The clip on the headphones isn't all that useful either I found.

SE doesn't like big hands

Their designers must all be females :O

This isn't so much a negative for me but for some it could be I guess. The buttons are kind of on the small side. Not too small, but I would assume for big hands (fingers) you might find it a bit annoying to work with at first. The round navigation thing in the middle for up, down, left and right selections is also a little difficult to maneuver sometimes. I still have trouble with it and I've had it for a week now. A lack of flip functionality also means I have to use the Lock keys function which I find a bit tedious but oh well, it's better than actually pushing buttons and making calls when you're out.

Verdict? 9/10

Wonderful phone, Great Low Price

Those are some small nit picks on a very wonderful phone. Actually I couldn't stop raving about it when I first got it. I just loved it so much. This really is the perfect little phone for people on a budget but loves a phone with all the functions they think they would need plus more. It also has a great design to show off to your friends so what is there to lose? I've been converted to a Sony Ericsson fan after this buy. Highly recommended.
