Let's Eliminate SIDS...

Ranked #10,777 in Parenting & Kids, #393,235 overall

SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants ages one to 12 months of age

We want a world where no parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, cousin, or best friend loses a beloved, precious infant to SIDS. SIDS claims the lives of almost 2,500 infants in the U.S. each year - almost 7 babies every day. SIDS deaths occur unexpectedly and quickly to apparently healthy infants, usually during sleep. SIDS is not caused by child abuse or neglect, nor is it due to smothering, suffocation or choking. The CJ Foundation for SIDS is a nationwide health organization dedicated to recognizing the special needs of the SIDS community through funding SIDS research and support services. We are recognized as the leading SIDS organization in the country.

Know how to keep your baby safe during sleep

Make sure everyone who cares for your baby knows the safe-sleep rules

SIDS is one of the leading causes of death among infants one month to one year of age. In the United States a baby dies from SIDS every three and a half hours. SIDS does not discriminate and can happen to any family.

Risk-Reduction

Steps to Reduce the Risk if SIDS

1) Put baby on his/her back for sleeptime and naptime.
2) No smoking near the baby and don't smoke when pregnant.
3) Do not let the baby get too hot during sleep.
4) Sleep surface must be firm, such as a safety-approved crib mattress, covered by a fitted sheet. Don't use pillows, blankets, quilts, or sheepskin. Remove all soft objects and toys.
5) Do not let the baby sleep in a bed, couch or armchair with adults or other children.
6) Make sure ALL caretakers know how to keep baby safe.
7) Provide baby with "tummy-time" when awake and watched by a competent adult.

The CJ Foundation for SIDS is one of the only funders of SIDS Research and Education

In April 1993, Joel and Susan Hollander lost their four-and-a-half-month-old daughter, Carly Jenna, to SIDS. In 1994 the Hollanders honored the memory of their daughter by founding the CJ Foundation for SIDS. Losing Carly Jenna was the beginning of a crusade for the Hollanders to increase funding for SIDS research and raise awareness of risk- reduction methods. Their goal was to ensure that, ultimately, no parent would be faced with losing his or her baby to SIDS. To find out how you can help, please visit http://www.cjsids.com/

"In Their Own Words"

Remembering Reese Jaclyn Goslee

This story is reprinted from the Fall 2008 newsletter, "ConSIDerations," a newsletter for families and friends of the CJ Foundation for SIDS.

Reese Jaclyn entered our lives November 8, 2007. "Reesie Cup" as we began to call her, is our 3rd child. Perfectly healthy with beautiful blue eyes and crooked smile, we could not have asked for a more perfect child. Since we all have brown hair & brown eyes, my wife Kelly & I joked about having a blue-eyed baby. God must have been listening, because here she finally was! A perfectly normal, healthy baby right? Kelly and I were just saying how lucky we were to have three healthy, beautiful children. Did we speak too soon? Our lives were shattered on March 20th, 2008. A normal, hectic weekday morning, we got the kids ready to get out the door. Reese got ready to go to the babysitters at 9:00 a.m. I gave her and the rest of the family a kiss as they pulled out of the driveway--Reese was smiling BIG as usual. Just three hours later, at 12:00 p.m. as I was working, I received a horrific call from a police officer who was at the babysitters house. I was told Reese was not doing too great. She was put down for her usual 1.5 hour nap, the babysitter went to get her up and found her unconscious. They did CPR on little Reese for 20 minutes. After two sleepless nights at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) with Reese on a ventilator, we were told the words that will change our lives forever, our princess was gone. An autopsy was completed and we were told her death was due to SIDS. We are in shock, completely numb and feel like our hearts were ripped from our chests. We feel like a part of us died with her. We respect and thank everybody who has been there for us during this unbearable time and to those who are fighting for a cure for SIDS. We plan to join that fight with you!
