SOG Seal Knives Evaluation
We've all seen the SEALs in Coronado, CA going through BUDs training. Sitting in our chairs and trying to will the guys, telepathically, to NOT walk up and ring the bell. Alas, only a select few can endure the physical and mental beating to win the right to wear the SEAL Trident.
Any knife that will accompany a Navy SEAL member must be just as tough. Here is a list of the tests that were performed on each knife:
* tip breaking strength
* blade toughness
* sharpness and edge retention
* handle twist-off limits
* two-week salt water immersions
* gasoline and acetylene torch resistance
* chopping
* hammering
* prying
* penetration performance
* cutting ability for six different types of rope and nylon line
* low noise and low reflection factors
* intense hands-on training in the field
If it's good enough for the NAVY SEALs...

This is just a quick note on the new SOG Aura-SEAL knife. This knife is actually getting pretty good reviews which, to be honest, I didn't expect. I had a problem with the tang of the knife and how thin it was where it meets the handle. I think I'm going to have to give this knife a second look so check back for a more in depth report.

The Seal Pup looks the same as the Seal Team Elite which is pictured further down this page, the only difference is that it is 2.5 to 3 inches shorter. This is, in my opinion, the most popular of all the SOG Seal Knives.
As with any knife you buy that has serrations you need to carry a special sharpening stone to keep them sharp. It's an extra step in maintaining the edges but well worth it.
You can order the SOG M37-K Seal Pup with a Nylon or a Kydex sheath. The Kydex has a groove in it and the picture above shows how to cut rope or paracord without having to remove your knife using the groove that is cut into the sheath. If you're using this as a hiking knife I would suggest the Nylon sheath, but if you're going for tactical then I would recommend the Kydex. It will be more durable in the long run.
The blade is 4.75 in. long and made from AUS6 or AUS8 steel depending on if you get the regular SOG Seal Pup or the Seal Pup Elite knife. It also comes with several different durable powder coats which is nice. Personally I like the tiger stripe. It has a Zytel glass reinforced handle and is 9" in overall length. The size of this knife fits most everyone well, however people with smaller hands particularly seem to like it.

If you're looking for a nice loooong tactical knife, this is the knife for you. This knife comes in at a little over a foot in length. I really like the finger grips in the handle, it makes for a good firm grip. Also, the tang of the knife goes all the way through the handle and sticks out the bottom for glass breakage.
There is jimping (a fancy word for notches) on the spine of the blade. They don't really seem to have a function other than to look good. Maybe if you choked up on the blade to do some detail cutting they might help but other than that I think they are just for looks.
The blade has a hollow grind profile which makes it perfect for slicing and dicing, however it will make the blade a bit weaker than the old style SOG Seal 2000 knife that had a flat grind. This knife comes with the standard nylon sheath as well but the Kydex sheath will fit this knife if you want to spring for the upgrade.
The SOG SE-37 Seal Team Elite has a black Zytel handle with a black TiNi partially serrated blade.

The SOG S37 Seal Team Knife (which was formerly known as the Seal Team 2000) comes with a nylon sheath and features a 7" powder coated blade of AUS8 stainless steel and a 5.25" black handle.
The nylon sheath has a modular mounting system for MOLLE type applications, military belts, vests, etc. and it helps protect the knife from dust and moisture. It has a pouch on the front so that you can add a multi-tool or a folding knife. This sheath is also nice and quiet. A Kydex sheath is an option but you'll have to pay for it as it doesn't come standard.

I'm including this knife here mainly because of it's name. It is advertised by SOG as the SEAL Revolver. I don't really consider this a Seal knife, I would consider it more of a hunting or camping knife and I doubt very seriously that this knife went through the rigorous testing in which the knives above were subjected. However it is cool and the added functionality makes this two tools in one.
I haven't tested it so I don't know how well the lock works but I did read where if you don't hold down the release button fully when you revolve the knife, the metal pin can scratch the finish off of the blade. I also found a nice discussion on a knife site that the designer of the knife was involved in. According to the thread someone that bought the knife had a problem with a lot of lateral movement when the knife was in either position. It turns out that he had a screw that had come loose in the handle that may not have been secured properly. Tightening the screw and using a little loctite solved the problem.
People who have used this knife seem to love it. It is made in China so keep that in mind if that's important to you. The only other complaint I've seen is that it is a little large. I'm not really sure that's a bad thing...

- I love my Seal 2000, but the sheath broke after one day of walking around with it clipped to my belt while hunting.
