Fun Stuff that you and your special needs kids can enjoy!

This lens is being created as a way of of sharing information I have found looking for enjoyable recreation activities for the Special Needs Family. It is my hope that other families who need these special resources will be able to use them for rewarding fun family time as well.

Finding fun and rewarding activities for you special needs family

I decided to create a lens on this topic for a couple of reasons. First, I have found it very difficult personally to find appropriate fun activites that our whole famly could enjoy. Autistic children can be very difficult to handle behaviorally, and the mainstream public is not very forgiving. Unsensitive people can be quite judgmental of spectrum parents as not being able to dicipline their child properly. This is not only embarrassing, but heartbreaking because your child cannot handle the situation. As a result we tend to isolate ourselves so as not to feel the pain and lack of empathy from society. For this reason alone, I feel it's especially important subject for new special needs families.

Then I was also inspired after watching an episode of ABC's Extreme Home Makeover. EHM choose a deserving family in our area who has a Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program for Special Needs Kids. It was so encouraging to see special needs children throughly enjoying themselves as they rode their horses. It really made me start to think that their are places for my children to fit in, I just need to be dilligent and find them.

So this Lens is where I plan to share information and encourage other families to push past the bad experiences and move onward and upward. We will find a place in this world for our kids too!

Camp ASCCA - Kim Harris' Courage Inspires All

Four years ago, Kim Harris' life revolved around horses--she trained them, showed them, and she even taught riding lessons. On October 29, 2003, Kim had an accident while on a trail ride that left her with a brain injury--and kept her away from horses until she visited Camp ASCCA. ...this could be a major step in taking back her old life... Kim, who moved from Germany to Huntsville, AL at the age of three and is now the mother of a college-age son and daughter, attended Camp ASCCA's Session 7 with Alabama Head Injury Foundation. When horseback riding showed up on the list of camp activities, Kim knew this could be a major step in taking back her old life. Camp ASCCA is Alabama's Special Camp for Children and Adults. The world's largest, and best, outdoor recreation center of its kind, ASCCA is open year-round. Visit Camp ASCCA at http://www.campascca.org/journal/
