Formentera's Only Port

Sabina Formentera is the way some folks refer to Port de la Savina, which is the only port on the Balearic island of Formentera. In fact there is no airport either so if you are planning to visit or leave the island then you will pass through la Savina. That said, the port has a lot to offer the visitor and you should certainly take the time to have a look around, and enjoy views of Ibiza and Es Vedra

Most people arrive here from the port of La Savina from Ibiza, but during the summer months there are also ferries running from Barcelona, Palma, Valencia and Denia. If you are coming over from Ibiza the boat only takes around 30 minutes, and there are four main companies offering services: Balearia, Mediterranea Pitiusa, Acciona-Trasmediterranea, and Iscomar.

Port de la Savina is a good place to get started - it has rentals shops for bicycles, mopeds, and cars, bars and restaurants, and a beautiful marina. As you get off the boat you will see the tourist information office right in front of you. It's pretty handy because you can pick up some maps, and then wonder offer to a nearby cafe to make your plan. Once your plan of action is set you can go and rent your transport and head off. But do have a look around at the beautiful marina before you leave.

Es Vedra is a small island east of Ibiza, and there is no better place to get a better view of it than La Savina. Es Vedra has many rumors and myths surrounding it including:

- That it featured in Homer
- UFO's visit the island
- Rocks were taken from Es Vedra to build the Egyptian pyramids
- The Phoenician goddess of fertility, Tanit, considered it her island
- It is the tip of Atlantis
- Ritual sacrifices to Tanit used to be performed on the island
- Whether or not any of these are true you can enjoy the view.

Port de la Savina is the perfect departure point for a look around Estany des Peix. This is an inland lagoon where smaller boats drop anchor. The tracks around the outside throng with nature, and there is a path that leads to Can Marroig. Then there is Estany Pudent, the second coastal lagoon which is rich in wildlife. It is a short walk from La Savina.

If you want to visit some beautiful beaches you have a couple of options. You could catch a boat from Sabina Formentera taking you to Platja de Ses Illetes, and then on to Illa de s'Espalmador. Or you could simply take a short walk or bicycle trip northbound to Es Cavall d'en Borras. Whichever you decide, you will certainly be glad that you made the island your base for part of your trip to Formentera.

However, those longing for a more get-away-from-it-all holiday vibe often opt for a trip to Spain's Balearic Islands, an archipelago made up of four islands, Majorca, Ibiza, Minorca and the slightly lesser known island of Formentera.
