Repel Spiders! Safe and natural, non-toxic methods for repelling spiders.

How do I get rid of spiders safely, without poisonous insecticides? What will repel spiders but is safe to use around pets?
Spiders may serve a useful purpose in nature, but I don't like them. Well, I don't mind them if they stay where they are suppose to, which is outside and not crawling around in my living quarters, or my hair.
I don't relish getting trapped in their sticky webs, along with the remains of their last meal.
I hate looking at my outside lights and seeing them loaded with webs. Moth pieces and insect particles don't belong glued to my house.
I don't like going to my basement to retrieve dinner from the freezer, only to be bombarded by a cascade of baby spiders descending like tiny paratroopers.
Nope, I just don't like it at all.
No Toxins Allowed
This can be a problem when your goal is to get rid of spiders and other insects.
I am also one of those people who don't kill things. I believe in the sanctity of all living things, creeping, crawling, swimming, flying, walking. Whatever it is, I respect its right to life. Well, most of the time anyways.

Not so tasty!
What do spiders not like the taste of?
Spiders do not like the taste of citrus! Lemon, orange, lime, all repel spiders. It will not kill them, but it will discourage them from setting up home where their little feet can "taste" it.
How to Make your own Spider Repellent.
Spider be gone!
Here is how to make a safe and natural spider repellent that is safe for the environment.Spray it where spiders congregate, and you don't want them.
You will need:
Not much to it, huh?

You have to use real essential oils though, not synthetics. Synthetics will not have the same citrus taste that spiders dislike.
You can purchase essential oils many places, and they can be found quite easily online. Citrus essential oils are quite inexpensive, and lemon seems to be the most potent.
What is an essential oil?
Essential oils are aromatic volatile oils extracted from the leaves, stems, flowers, and other parts of plants. In the case of citrus essential oils, they are extracted from the peel.
They are not oily, despite their name, but watery feeling. Essential oils can stain some fabrics, so be careful if you spray them around furniture or clothing.
Fill a spray bottle with about a quart of water with a tablespoon of lemon essential and then spray it around spider infested areas. Rain can wash it away pretty quickly outside, so a more frequent application will be necessary.

Since spraying my basement rafters with my lemon concoction, I have had no spiders return. I can hardly believe it, but it's been months and no spiders. Cool!
*WARNING*
Essential oils can irritate the nasal passages of pets, and are especially annoying to cats. Cats should never have direct contact with essential oils of ANY kind, as their livers cannot metabolize them, and it can cause liver or kidney damage.
Keep your cat and dog away from sprayed areas until they are dry.
I have also heard that vinegar will work as well, diluted and sprayed in spider areas. Some people are making mixes with water with a splash of Dr. Bronner's Peppermint or Lavender Soap, and adding a few drops of citrus essential oils. I guess as long as it tastes bad to a spider, it will repel them.
Just for Fun!

In 1965 Dr. Peter Witt gave drugs to spiders and observed their effects on web building. This short film about the results of the experiment was created by First Church Of Christ, Filmmaker.

Spider Trivia
Spiders aren't insects.
Spiders have no bones. Their tough skin serves as a protective outer skeleton.
All spiders have 8 legs and all spin silk.
Spiders make silk inside their bodies, pulling it out with their legs from holes near their bottom.
Spiders eat only liquids. After injecting venom into their prey, it paralyzes it and turns it to a liquid, which they then drink.
If a spider isn't hungry it will wrap its' prey in webbing and save it for later.
Male spiders are usually smaller than the females.
After mating some female spiders eat the male. All in all, not a bad idea.

- I live in the country, and our yard is covered with funnel webs in the fall. I'll try the spray technique. Have you ever heard of horse apples? A neighbor once said they are supposed to repel spiders, but she moved and I don't know what they are. I hate spiders in any place, but I've had enough of them in my house! I don't want to poison my children trying to get rid of them though. I'm glad for the non-toxic tip.

- Thanks! I am moving to the mountains soon and have been told that there are huge spiders in the area. Scorpions too! If I can control the bugs in the house, I will be the happiest person on earth. Yes, I am afraid of spiders. Yuch!

- Hi,
I recently lost my beloved cat, Amba, a domestic s/h to red back spider bite. There were hundreds of spiders and nests last December thru to February this year. I am still grieving so much for the loss of my cat. I have used two different pest controllers, who made me feel much safer by spraying along the perimeter of my property. I have a townhouse rental home, so the courtyard provides no breezes to flow in freely, and I have cluttered up my courtyard garden with too many native plants and garden mulch, yuccas, which I discovered that spiders were using as their home to nest in. Now that I thank God I still have 3 other younger cats, expensive breeds, I guard them with my life, when they go outside. I heard that lemon oil, mixed with solubilizer works well, and also the lavender, neem, citronella, rosemary, even coconut oil. I try everything I can to mist around and over the trees, shrubs, eaves, around the house etc. I try to keep the inside of the home less cluttered to
