Saint-Lazare

Saint-Lazare, Quebec is my home. It's a great town to live in and it's a great town to raise a family in. The people are super friendly. Crime is very low. It's full of big beautiful trees. One thing that makes this area unique is the equestrian zoning. It's a great place to live if you live to ride your ATV or snowmobile.

How Saint-Lazare got its start

Here's a brief history according to Saint-Lazare's website. The story begins in the 18th century.

French colonists began settling in the area now known as Saint-Lazare in the 18th century.

At the time the land was owned by a Lord. English speaking immigrants began arriving after the war of 1812. They came from New England, England, Cumberland and Scotland.

In 1875 the corporation municipale de la paroisse de Saint-Lazare is established and the Lord's tenure is abolished.

You can download an ebook that tells the story of Saint-Lazare from 1875-2000 here: Click here to download history book.

Saint-Lazare Coffee Talks

A chance to meet the mayor and town councillors of Saint-Lazare

On the last Saturday of each month at 10am at the community centre the mayor and city councillors of Saint-Lazare meet with citizens over a cup of coffee. It is a chance for residents to meet them and to discuss whatever concerns them. Sometimes the meeting are cancelled if there is a holiday or something like that so it's a good idea to refer to the meeting schedule. The meeting schedule is here: ville.saint-lazare.qc.ca.

Saint-Lazare Wikipedia Article

Here is an article published in Wikipedia. It has a lot of information about Saint-Lazare that I didn't know about because I didn't grow up here. I've only been here for two years. For example I had no clue there was a fire that destroyed the Regent chemical plant and forced the town to evacuate seventy percent of its resident in 2001. (Hopefully never rebuilt!) I also never knew that the community centre was built in 2001 and was the first community centre ever built in this city.

Saint-Lazare, also known as Saint-Lazare-de-Vaudreuil, is an off-island suburb of Montreal, in southwestern Quebec, Canada in the Regional County Municipality of Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

The city of Saint-Lazare has experienced rapid growth since 1990, fueled predominantly by the arrival of young, middle-class families. New residents flocked to the area with the idea of escaping the hustle and bustle of life on the island of Montreal. Although Saint-Lazare residents are protective of their country lifestyle the area is not without its amenities.

Meili Faille, Saint-Lazare's Federal Member of Parliament

Our Federal Representative is Meili Faille of the Bloc Québécois.

Not much of a representative if your mother tongue is not French or if you love Canada. Saint-Lazare and Hudson are apparently in the middle of a big separatist area. Don't expect your federal vote to count for much.

Her website is at www.meilifaille.org and even though Canada has two official languages they only published their site in French.

I don't know what upsets me more, the fact my rights as a Canadian citizen are not respected, in fact they are disrespected, or that the Federal government collects my taxes but otherwise is nowhere to be seen. I can tell you the Canadian Federal government doesn't do a thing to protect minority rights in Québec.

Lucie Charlebois, Saint-Lazare Provincial Representative

Our provincial representative is Lucie Charlebois. She is a member of the Liberal party. The Liberal party is known as a federalist party.

Her profile is here: Lucie Charlebois profile

So we have a separatist nationalist party in Ottawa that is trying to secede Quebec from Canada and we have a federalist party in Quebec that wants to keep Quebec in Canada. Yes I know, ridiculous.
