Saint Andrew - Patron Saint of Scotland
... and Romania, Russia, Luqa in Malta, Amalfi in Italy, Greece and and of fishermen (including fishmongers etc), singers, single women, women hoping to get pregnant and the University of Patras, amongst others.
The St Andrew's cross, or Saltire, is the national flag of Scotland. It is a white X shaped cross on a blue background and is also incorporated into the Union Flag of the United Kingdom.
The St Andrew's cross used as the lens picture is from the magnificent wrought iron gates of Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh.

Why the X shaped cross?
There are great gaps in our knowledge of St Andrew's life. He was born at Bethsaida and we know him to be the younger brother of Saint Peter and according to some accounts he was the first disciple of Jesus - although sources disagree with each other on the order of the disciples. In the Old Testament we learn that Andrew was a son of Jonah (John).
It was Andrew and Peter who were fishing when Jesus approched them saying "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men" and it was with Andrew and Peter that Jesus stayed in Capernaum.
Andrew carried the gospel to many lands and there are legends of miracles. Eusebius and others tell us he preached in Scythia, Thrace, Asia Minor, along the Black Sea and up to Kiev.
Tradition has it that he founded the See of Byzantium as early as CE 38, the diocese later became the Patriarchate of Constantinople and Saint Andrew is its patron saint.
Saint Andrew also preached in Achaia in Greece. Aegeas and the Roman Governor at Patrae (Patras) is credited as ordering his crucifixion.
Sometimes the Romans were known to use a decussate (X shaped) cross for the purpose but one version of the story tells that Saint Andrew, deeming himself unworthy of the same cross which bore Jesus, requested the decussate cross for his crucifixion.
Legend also has it that he preached for two days from that cross before finally falling silent.
Hence we have the Saint Andrew's Cross.

Why is there no gospel of Saint Andrew?
Does this Gospel still exist or is it lost for all time?
The Feast Day of Saint Andrew
... 30th November
30th November is the Feast Day of Saint Andrew or Saint Andrew's Day to most of us.In parts of Eastern Europe there are traditions associated with the eve of St Andrew's Day and mainly involving young women anxious to find out if they will get a husband in the following twelve months.
One of these involves pouring hot wax or molten metal into cold water and trying to divine an answer from the shapes which form. This is sometimes referred to as Ceroscopy.
There are many variations of the rituals performed, which vary from throwing a shoe over the shoulder to placing grain under the pillow, all are designed to reveal the identity or existence of a future husband.
A tradiition for the day after Saint Andrew's Day sees single young men and women floating cups in a tub. Should a male's and female's cup come into contact with a "priest" cup, it suggests a wedding.
I have wondered if there is a specific type of feast one should lay on for St Andrew's Day but could find nothing on the subject. However, knowing that St Andrew was at the Sermon on the Mount, I rather think that something involving bread and fish would be a suitable meal.
If there are traditional meals for Saint Andrew's Day in other countries I would be really interested in finding out.
At the beginning of 2007, royal assent was given to the St Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act, making November 30th (if a weekend, the nearest Monday) a bank holiday in Scotland.
Said of St Andrew
After Andrew stayed with Jesus and learned much - he - hastened to share it with his brother Peter - [saying] "We have found the Messiah, that is to say, the Christ." - his words - show the power of the master who has convinced them of this truth - [they] reveal a soul waiting with the utmost longing for the coming of the Messiah, looking forward to his appearing from heaven, rejoicing - and hastening to announce the event.
from a homily on the Gospel of John by Saint John Chrysostom
Why Saint Andrew for Scotland?
There are a few versions of the story of how Saint Andrew came to be Patron Saint of Scotland. In one, it is said that when, in the year 345, Emperor Constantine decided that Andrew's bones should be moved to Constantinople from Patrae, an angel told Saint Regulus to transport the relics instead to the far North-west, finally instructing him to land on the East coast of Fife, in Scotland, where he founded the Saint Andrew's which is famously known the World over for being the home of golf.
Another story tells us that when a Pictish king, Ongus prayed for guidance before battle, he saw a saltire cross formed of clouds in the sky and declared that Saint Andrew was guiding him and that if the battle be won that day, Saint Andrew would be held as the Patron Saint of the country.
He won, of course.
