I use salt therapy in my nebulizer and it really works well. I like it better than the traditional medication because of the expectorant effect.

    Hi TheSuccess,
    Very interesting concept.

Returning to sprinkle a little angel dust over your salt pipes, excellent information and plenty of hope for those with allergies and asthma.

NaCl is a true miracle maker when it comes to allergies, but the therapies must be on the individual level as not every therapy works for everyone. My teen daughter's allergy was gone after only several months of using NaCl in the form of homeopathic remedy, but that was her. It doesn't have to be the same for others.

I stopped having asthma attacks from elementary school. But recently had a couple of strong congestions. thanks for the info.
  • Paroshep Jul 9, 2011 @ 3:06 am | delete
Hmm, I live at the sea and breathe salt air about 9 months per year--and still suffer from allergy congestion. The other 3 months may be slightly worse; I am not sure. Based upon this and your poll, I would say there are other factors at work that determine whether salt air can help a particular person or not.
    Cheers,

    Hi,
Thanks for your relating your experience, I believe we are only at the beginning of our knowledge of allergies and other problems that may or may not be caused by air pollutants, chemicals in foods. My niece for instance cannot drink even a glass of coke.
  • phoenix-arizona-friends Jul 6, 2011 @ 8:28 pm | delete
    These look cool.
  • Teddi14 Jul 2, 2011 @ 9:33 am | delete
I have never heard about the salt pipes. I do use sinus washes I want one for sure!!!! I have suffered for years with asthma, allergies, and I have had four sinus surgeries and as a result can not smell at all! I really don't like taking Advair even though it really helps but I get thrush all the time! This lens is awesome and has gotten me very excited. I can not wait to try it! Bonus--maybe it can help my snoring/coughing husband at night too. BLESSED this lens!
  • judd Jan 25, 2012 @ 12:48 am | delete
Teddi14: I also use Advair and was getting thrush as a result. I rinse and gargle between and after inhales and use oil of oregano after and a small dish of plain unsweetened yogurt. Has the thrush pretty much under control. judd

I had never heard of this, my brother suffered for years with Chronic Asthma, and I wish we had seen this, as it sounds as though it would definately have helped him. A sad story that he is no longer after a fatal attack took him from us, we have a lot of experience from trying different things, and wish we could have tried this as I love this idea, and can see the benefits of the slat pipes. I love the bath salts and will definately be tring these for my bath! what a wonderful setailed and informed page ~Blessed~

This is really fascinating. I currently have bronchitis so I was looking for help with that, but my friend has asthma, so I will definitely let her know about this.
  • livingfrontiers Feb 24, 2011 @ 6:35 pm | delete
Never heard of a salt pipe, but it makes total sense! From a chemical reaction, comes a anti-inflammatory reaction. Inflammation is a cause of many illness, so creating a sodium vacuum often produces a wellness effect. People who live near oceans or salt-beds, are often healthy and live longer....

This sounds really interesting, never heard of it before, thanks
  • artour Feb 11, 2011 @ 7:49 pm | delete
Salt pipes should have benefits connected with intermittent hypercapnic hypoxic training since the composition of the gas in the lungs changes (more CO2 and less O2). Both effects favor breathing retraining and our basal or automatic breathing pattern becomes slower and lighter after the breathing session.
In particular, salt pipes have similarities with the Frolov breathing device (there are several other devices used in the former USSR and Russia these days). For details related to the Frolov device see, http://www.normalbreathing.com/frolov-breathing-device.php

Fascinating and so well covered! An underground church made of salt has to be something to see. The salt pipe can change a lot of lives for sure and it is amazing that it relieves nicotine cravings while trying to quit smoking. I just have to lensroll this to my Everyday Health Ledger lens. Did I say fascinating? Beautifully done!

Interesting, I had never heard of the Salt Pipe before, but it's worth looking into. I've used the netipot for relieving sinus issues, but I think salt pipes are different. Thanks for sharing!
  • tssfacts Nov 4, 2010 @ 5:32 am | delete
Excellent article. I had heard of the salt lamps but not the salt pipes. From a medical point of view it does make sense.
  • aj2008 Oct 8, 2010 @ 5:57 pm | delete
No, I dont use a salt pipe because my asthma was completely relieved by a homeopath using extract of lobelia - I dont say cured because once you have suffered asthma you never take anything for granted but if I ever get "chesty" again, I may just use a salt pipe.

This is such an interesting lens :)
  • skiesgreen Sep 15, 2010 @ 10:56 pm | delete
Its amazing as I was discussing this very thing on the past week-end when I bought some Himalayan Salt and now I see this lens. *-*Blessed*-* and featured on Sprinkled with Stardust

I remember the show where Dr. Oz talked about the salt pipe. I have also "listened" to the book Salt and found it fascinating. Thanks for reminding me of this product.
  • clouda9 May 20, 2010 @ 8:48 pm | delete
I've not had any experience with salt pipes, in fact I'd not heard of them until clicking here from the Giant Squid Community Showcase post tonight. Excellent info and if Dr. Oz recommends I listen.
  • vallain May 20, 2010 @ 8:13 pm | delete

Two of my inhalents are discontinued and the other may soon be. can Intal be replaed with breathing salt vapor? I didn't even know about salt vapor pipes. Envionmental asthmacs, chemical induced have no safe subsititues as cfc's are pulled and not replaced with meds for us. Why can't the pharmaceutical companies use salt vapor? Read my story. Query "Linda Joy Adams" using Bing search engine, click washingtonpost.com , click COMMENTS on my personal page.

I AM USING THE SALITAIR SALTPIPE EVERYDAY,BUT TODAY THE HEADLINES OF THE NEWSPAPER WERE 40,000 PEOPLE DIE EACH YEAR OF HIDDEN SALT,IS INHALING THE SALT PIPE CAUSING OTHER SIDEFFECTS ?
I dont cook with salt, confused Hampshirexx
  • thesuccess Nov 25, 2009 @ 2:32 pm | delete
Lesley, it is the hidden salt in processed foods that is causing these problems, where people get 50% of their daily requirements in just one serving, next to this any salt ingested via a salt pipe is minimal. I would always mentioning your use of a salt-pipe to your doctor.
  • thesuccess Nov 7, 2009 @ 10:00 am | in reply to Gwen | delete

I am not qualified in any way medically and this cannot give advice, but I would say you are only breathing in salty air, I mean just like if you were at the seaside, but do consult your doctor first. Lots of people use salt pipe inhalers because a) the medical ones aren't working and b) because they worry about the side-effects of the chemical inhalers.
  • Gwen Nov 7, 2009 @ 9:34 am | delete
I never heard of the pipe till a lady from church found it, it sounds like a great thing!! What I would like to know is, I have a problem with retaining water in my body due to a thing called pseudo tumor cerebri will this salt in the pipe cause more water gain in the body? would love to get away from the inhalers and nebulizer.
  • Demaw Nov 6, 2009 @ 11:51 pm | delete
At some hospitals I worked at they use normal saline in nebulizers. I swear by salt therapy. 5*
