Samba Daramy - owner of Authentic African Arts
Halloween Harvest Arts & Crafts Festival held at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds in Eureka, California in October of 2008. Samba had a booth that was very close to mine, selling amazingly beautiful African Baskets. I had occasion to go over and talk to him, and found him to be delightful in personality and quite pleasant to converse with. He graciously allowed me to photograph his work and I wanted to share it with everybody.
Samba Shows Me How to Weave a Basket
The baskets are breath taking! The colors are vibrant and they are "GREEN" !!!
~ Green meaning made from a renewable resource that doesn't pollute our planet ~
Watching Samba weave was one of the most interesting experiences I've ever had. His nimble fingers seemed to have a life of their own, as he skillfully and almost without looking handled the multiple strands of grass.
The grasses are dyed different colors, he said, which didn't really surprise me since some of the colors I'm sure don't grow naturally in grasses. Still, the variety of color and design made it difficult to choose just one!
In this day of "paper vs plastic" I think more people ought to try these wonderful baskets for shopping. If you love functional art as I do, you are going to want one of these for yourself.
