Included are paintings and drawing of classic historic landmarks such as Balboa Park, Old Town, Downtown San Diego, Coronado Island, La Jolla, and other well known California landscapes, seascapes that dance with color and life.
-I love and appreciate both new and old San Diego, along with the California history that surrounds these settings. I first went out in search of old homes to paint, and soon realized there was so much more beauty in the overall experience of the city. I find the city and its people inspire me at every turn to create art.I go out in search of special places around San Diego County and recreate in art a mix of everyday activity in neighborhood street scenes, all in bold color. In this publication is a selection of my favorite paintings from this group, dating from 2005 to 2007 - RD Riccoboni

Heritage Row by RD Riccoboni, acrylic on canvas 2006.The Green and Red Home is the Sherman-Gilbert House (1887) Stick Eastlake -- (City Historic Site #8) This house was built and first owned by John Sherman, cousin of General William Tecumseh Sherman. The "widow's walk" and circular window are key elements of this, the first structure moved to Heritage Park, in the spring of 1971. From 1892 to 1965, sisters Bess and Gertrude Gilbert, patrons of art and music, brought internationally famous entertainers to receptions in their home. Among the artists were Yehudi Menuhin, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, and Artur Rubinstein. The Park Ranger office is located on the bottom floor. Next door is Bushyhead House (1887) Italianate -- Edward Wilkerson Bushyhead, early San Diego sheriff, chief of police, and San Diego Union newspaper owner, built this house as a rental. The Italianate style combines double doors with glass panels, tall protruding bay windows, regularly spaced brackets, and a low-pitched roof. The Bushyhead House (along with the Christian House and the Burton House) was moved to its Heritage Park location in summer of 1976. Bushyhead, who was part Cherokee Indian, marched in the Trail of Tears during the displacement of the Southeastern tribes in 1838-39.
This 7.8-acre county park is dedicated to the preservation of San Diego's Victorian architecture. Expansion downtown after WWII threatened these structures with demolition on their original sites. Public and private funds paid for the acquisition, relocation, and restoration of these buildings. Now owned by the county, the structures are leased to private and commercial entities responsible for interior renovation and operation in keeping with the park's Victorian themes.

Botanical Building, Balboa Park
RD Riccoboni acrylic on canvas
Balboa Park San Diego by RD Riccoboni here is the reflecting pool and Botanical Building. The Botanical Building in San Diego's Balboa Park was the largest wood lath structure in the world when it was built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition. The frame of the building originally was meant for a train station in another city and was aquired by the exposition at a tremendous discount.A 193 by 43 foot reflecting pond and smaller companion pool in front of the Botanical Building were originally referred to as Las Lagunas de las Flores (The Lakes of the Flowers). The pools - which contain exotic water lilies and lotus, goldfish and Japanese koi - were designed as aquatic gardens.
During World War the reflecting pool was used as a swimming pool so sailors at a Naval Training Station - in Balboa Park at that time - could learn to swim. The pool also saw controversial use as a pond for bait and fly casting which was discontinued in 1949 when a fly casting pool was opened in Morley Field.
When the Botanical Building opened to the public in 1915 bird cages holding Linnets, thrushes and canaries had been placed among the palms, bamboos, banana trees, Aralia elegantissima and Aralia chabrierii. Some plants grew too tall, right through the laths and beginning in 1917 were removed or cut down.

Coronado Island
Jogging the Beach on Coronado Island painted by RD Riccoboni.Coronado is a small "island" town in San Diego Bay, approximately 7.4 square miles in size, connected to the City of San Diego by the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and to the City of Imperial Beach to the south by State Highway 75. The town is the neighbor of Naval Base Coronado which includes Naval Air Station North Island, home port for two aircraft carriers and the Naval Amphibious Base where the elite SEALS are trained.
Downtown Coronado boasts unique shops and many restaurants serving residents and visitors. Three destination resorts including the famous Hotel Del Coronado pictured in the background of my painting, and many small hotels offer a variety of accommodations. This award-winning beach, recently ranked second best in the country by the Travel Channel, is a special jewel. The beach runs all the way from the North Island Naval Base south past the Hotel Del basically all the way to Mexico. I go there all the time.

The Baby Del painted by RD Riccoboni
The Baby del house on Coronado Island in San Diego Bay was built in 1887 by Mrs. Livingston. The theory about why it looks so similar to the Hotel del Coronado is that the Victorian house, built six months prior, was the training ground for the carpenters who built the hotel. The most fascinating thing about the Baby del is that is has only been on Coronado island since 1983. It was moved by boat from San Diego costing $120,000 and six month of planning to orchestrate the moving of the Victorian house from its Sherman Heights neighborhood, near Villa Montezuma, at 24th and J Streets, to its present site, which had been a tennis court. It is both a San Diego and Coronado landmark. Baby's first day at the Beach

This tiny beach nook, part of the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, is sheltered by picturesque cliffs and offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean in an intimate setting. La Jolla Cove has some of the clearest water of all San Diego beaches, making it ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling. The gentle lapping waves of La Jolla Cove also make for an enjoyable day of sunbathing, picnicking, or reading a book. Just above La Jolla Cove is Scripps Park, a great place for romping and picnicking while taking in the majestic Pacific Ocean. The walking trails next to Coast Boulevard, above the beach, offer world-class views of the water and the sandstone cliffs leading down to ocean's edge. Villa Montezuma

Built in 1887 for internationally-celebrated author and musician "spiritualist" Jesse Shepard and his "companion-secretary" Lawrence Tonner. The two held famous seance's for San Diego's finest in their home. The Victorian house offers an exotic exterior, ornate interior and art glass windows. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Villa Montezuma hosts a variety of cultural and community activities including Victorian Christmas celebrations, Victorian teas, musicales, poetry readings and educational programs. Villa Montezuma is Located in Sherman Heights at 1925 K St. (20th and K streets) near downtown San Diego.
San Diego Harbor Sunset
San Diego Harbor sunset by RD Riccoboni. The ship here is the HMS. Surprise is a 179-foot full rigged ship. Her designers and builders made a painstaking effort to recreate a 24 gun frigate of Great Britan's Nelson era Royal Navy. The result is a replica vessel unmatched in its authenticity and attention to detail. Originally christened H.M.S. Rose when she was launched in 1970, she served as a sail training vessel operating out of several East coast ports for over 30 years. the ship underwent extensive modifications for the production of the film in 2002. The museum acquired the ship in October, 2004. Plans include restoring the ship to seaworthy condition, but the timetable for her return to sea is uncertain. The same ship was used in the academy award winning film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World found a permanent home at the Maritime Museum of San Diego in 2004. Full Sail in San Diego Bay
Full Sail in San Diego Bay by RD Riccoboni. Beautiful Point Loma is in the background.San Diego Bay has played host to many historical events. Without the Big Bay and its peaceful, moderate climate, California may have developed without the influence of Father Junípero Serra's Spanish mission system. And without San Diego Bay, pioneer aviators such as Curtiss, Lindbergh, Fleet and Ryan would never have given San Diego its aerospace and defense legacy.
Did you know that Point Loma was discovered in 1542 and named San Miguel? The Big Bay's rich history starts at the tip of Point Loma where you can visit the Cabrillo National Monument.

Panorama Street Palms by RD Riccoboni. These beautiful trees are in University Hieghts. University Heights is one of San Diego's oldest communities. Its heart is near the intersection of Adams Avenue and Park Boulevard. If you think you see images of ostriches everywhere, that is because in the early 1900's Harvey Bentley's Ostrich Farm supplied the raw materials for fashionable ostrich-feather hats and garments. (We're more politically correct in the 21st Century.) You can see them in my Pen and Ink drawings of the University Heights Sign. Point Loma Light - San Diego California
Point Loma Light - San Diego California, by artist RD Riccoboni. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse stood watch over the entrance to San Diego Bay for 36 years. At dusk on November 15, 1855 the light keeper climbed the winding stairs and lit the light for the first time. What seemed to be a good location 422 feet above sea level, however, had a serious flaw. Fog and low clouds often obscured the light. On March 23, 1891 the light was extinguished and the keeper moved to a new lighthouse location closer to the water at the tip of the Point.
Today the Old Point Loma Light House still stands watch over San Diego, sentinel to a vanished past. The National Park Service has refurbished the exterior and interior to its historic 1880's appearance, including rebuilding some out-buildings, a reminder of a bygone era. Located in the Cabrillo national Monument where climbing out of his boat and onto shore in 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo stepped into history as the first European to set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States. In addition to telling the story of 16th century exploration, the park is home to a wealth of cultural and natural resources.

The Hotel Del Coronado
Painted by RD Riccoboni acrylic on canvas 2006
Modern Coronado history really began in 1886 when a consortium of five men - Hampton L. Story, Elisha S. Babcock Jr., Jacob Gruendike (Who along with H.M. Covert started the San Diego Water Company in 1873 -the first in the city), Heber Ingle, and Joseph Collett - formed the Coronado Beach Company and began construction of the Hotel del Coronado. The Del was completed in 1888 and desiginated a National Historic Landmark in 1977.
Many famous guests have stayed at the Del including President Benjamin Harrison in 1891 and every U.S. President since Lyndon Johnson. The movie 'Some Like it Hot' starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis was filmed at the Hotel del Coronado in 1958. Many Hollywood stars such as Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and Marilyn Monroe frequented the hotel.
When England's Prince of Wales visited The Hotel del Coronado in 1920 he may have met his future wife who was then living in Coronado. The wife of Naval Air Station, North Island's first commanding officer remarried twice and finally become Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson Windsor, the late Duchess of Windsor, for whom King Edward of England gave up his throne in 1936.

Whaley House, Old Town San Diego by Riccoboni
Whaley House, Old Town San Diego by Riccoboni The first brick home in San Diego California is an 1856 Greek revival Mansion.According to the Travel Channel's America's Most Haunted, the Thomas Whaley House is believed to be the number one most haunted house in the United States. The mansion also housed the former county courthouse and San Diego's first commercial theater.
Old Town San Diego is considered the "birthplace" of California. San Diego is the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement in California. It was here in 1769, that Father Junipero Serra came to establish the very first mission in a chain of 21 missions that were to be the cornerstone of California's colonization. Father Serra's mission and Presidio were built on a hillside overlooking what is currently known as Old Town San Diego. At the base of the hill in 1820's, a small Mexican community of adobe buildings was formed and by 1835 had attained the status of El Pueblo de San Diego. In 1846, a U.S. Navy Lieutenant and a Marine Lieutenant, raised the American flag in the Old Town San Diego Plaza.

The Old Adobe Chapel was reconstructed in the 1930's, after the original structure was razed. The Adobe Chapel was the first parochial church in the first parish of California after the secularization of the missions in 1832. The Old Adobe Chapel was the setting for the fictional wedding of Ramona in Jackson's novel. In 1849, a small parish chapel was built and named Immaculate Conception. Now known as the Old Adobe Chapel, this preserved structure can be visited on Conde Street in Old Town. Construction on the present day church began in 1868 under the direction of Father Antonio Ubach. The church was finally completed and dedicated in 1919, and, aside from some structural renovations required for current building codes, has since stood the test of time Old Adobe Chapel Prints

Tallship The Star of India in San Diego Bay
by American Artist RD Riccoboni
The Star of India is the world's oldest active ship. She began her life on the stocks at Ramsey Shipyard in the Isle of Man in 1863. Iron ships were experiments of sorts then, with most vessels still being built of wood. Within five months of laying her keel, the ship was launched into her element. She bore the name Euterpe, after the Greek goddess of music. Name Star of India in 1906 she has been called the foremost symbol of San Diego, for ships like her were the original sinews of our city's progress. Yet she is more than that-she is the essence of a vanished age, a glorious time when men and women voyaged under towers of masts and clouds of canvas. The Californian is in the background to the left and the HMS Suprise just behind The Star of India. Tallship The Star of India print

The original adobe home was restored in 1910 with funds provided by the Spreckels family, under the direction of Architect Hazel Waterman; it was donated to the State by Mr. Legler Benbough; furnishings were provided with the assistance of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. For many years, the building was mistakenly known as "Ramona's Marriage Place" from Helen Hunt Jackson's novel. The museum now features furnished rooms and a working kitchen and large courtyard.
