Sarasota National Cemetery Honors Veterans on Florida's West Coast
Today, there are 141 national cemeteries in the United States. The Veterans Administration through its National Cemetery Administration administers 125 including Sarasota National Cemetery on the west coast of Florida. The Army still administers two national Cemeteries—Arlington and Soldiers Home. The Department of the Interior maintains 14 national cemeteries.
Burial in the VA's national cemeteries honors more than 3 million Americans, including veterans of every war and conflict—from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan. Approximately 17,000 acres of land from Hawaii to Maine, and from Alaska to Puerto Rico are devoted to the memorialization of those who served this nation. More than 300 recipients of the Medal of Honor are buried in VA's national cemeteries.
In addition to providing a gravesite and a graveliner, VA opens and closes the grave, provides a headstone or marker, a Presidential Memorial Certificate, a U.S. Flag, and perpetually cares for the grave at no cost to the veteran's family.
Today, more than 24 million veterans and Reservists and National Guard members with 20 years qualifying service (who are entitled to retired pay or would be entitled, if at least 60 years of age), have earned the honor of burial in a national cemetery. Veterans with discharges other than dishonorable, their spouses and dependent children may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery. Those who die on active duty may also be buried in a national cemetery.
When the Sarasota National Cemetary held its dedication ceremony on June 1, 2008 almost 3,000 people attended. Motorcycles, boat-sized Buicks sporting American flags and a procession of veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam, their families and local politicians traveled the route to the 295-acre cemetery on East State Road 72.
Sarasota National Cemetery is the sixth in Florida and part of the largest expansion of national cemeteries since the Civil War.

- Full military caisson burial held at Sarasota National Cemetery | WWSB ABC 7 Florida
- The first ever full military caisson burial ceremony was held Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the new Sarasota National Cemetery. This is one of the few services of this type ever to be held outside Arlington National Cemetery. First came the bag pipes, then horses hooves ring out across the new Sarasota National Cemetery as a jet-black horse leads the way for two more horses drawing the flag draped coffin of Korean War veteran Air Force 2nd Lt. Van Eitel.

From the hills, from the lake,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.

- "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
