Sark and Herm - The Secret Paradise Islands

Ranked #10,751 in Travel & Places, #271,422 overall

Guernsey's Crown Jewels

The beautiful (but tiny) islands of Sark and Herm are accessible via a short boat trip across from Guernsey. Completely traffic free, both islands offer fantastic escapes from the hectic pace of modern day living.
The Islands form part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. along with Alderney and other smaller Islands such as Jethou and Brecqou.

Sark

A bygone era lives on.

Situated some 90 miles from England and only 20 miles from France the Island of Sark is one of the smallest of the Channel Islands. It is easily accessible via a short boat trip across from the larger island of Guernsey.

Covering just 2 sq miles in area and with a population of less than 600, a visit to Sark is like a trip back in time - away from the hustle and bustle of modern living.

Upon arrival in Sark, visitors have the option of walking the steep hill up to the main Island or hitching a lift on the Island's only form of motorised transport - The 'Toast Rack'. Essentially a tractor drawn carriage, the Toast Rack is a delightful little welcome to the Island.

The Toast Rack

The main forms of transport on the Island are walking and cycling, however a horse and carriage is also available should your legs get a little tired!

Horse Drawn Carriage

Sark has beaches and cliffs aplenty, all of which boast stunning views and scenery.

Derrible Bay

Despite its small size, Sark boasts a wealth of restaurants and cafe/bars to suit all ages and tastes. From outdoor terrace style barbeques to fine dining, there is something for everyone.

Aval du Creux

If you long for a bygone era or simply wish to relax and unwind away from the modern day stresses of life, then i heartily recommend a visit to Sark. It's a true Oasis.

Does Sark now have cars (in which case I no longer want to live there)?

    It seems delightful!

Herm Island

The Paradise Island.

Getting to Herm

Herm Island is 3 miles from the coast of Guernsey and measures just a mile and a half long and half a mile wide. Just like its sister island of Sark, cars are banned here, however bicycles are also banned making this tiny Island a walker's paradise. Herm Island is relatively flat with long sandy beaches, ideal for family days out.

There is only one hotel on the Island, but it is beautiful and well presented. For longer stays on Herm Island, The White House Hotel is highly recommended.

The White House Hotel

Camping in Herm is very popular, particularly in the summer months. The campsite is well equipped and maintained to a very high standard.

Camping in Herm

Walking is the only form of transport in Herm, but when scenery is this good you may find yourself stopping continously to take in and admire the views.

Amazing Scenery in Herm

Herm Island boasts some of the prettiest and cleanest beaches in the whole of Great Britain. To bathe here is to be spoiled.

Belvoir Bay

The Mermaid Tavern is the social centre of Herm Island.
Named after an old cargo vessel used many years ago to carry supplies to the island, The Mermaid was originally a fishermans pub. Now a thriving 50 seater restaurant, bar and grocery store, The Mermaid Tavern is the popular stop off for anyone visiting the Island from Guernsey.

The Mermaid Tavern

Herm Island is for me, a little slice of paradise right on my doorstep. I can think of nothing better during the summer months than spending a day (or longer) exploring the Island with my family and unwinding on the beach.

Paradise

Herm Island is a must-visit destination.

I love the idea of a small island with no cars. Thanks for sharing information about these beautiful islands. Welcome to Squidoo, and especially to All Things Travel.
