We have all been there. After waiting in line for the cashier, they inspect your credit card or check and pronounce judgment on your character. Your signature is worn-off or missing from your credit card... or your phone number is not on your check. With Indignation or worse we reluctantly produce the requested information...while muttering under our breath or in our head something to the effect,
"Don't they know who I am?" or "Who is this young person to question my integrity?"

AS intrusive and embarrassing as it may be, Cashiers are doing you a favor by taking the extra effort to check your information. They are often the last line of defense and protection in the case where misplaced credit cards or checks fall into the hands of unscrupulous persons. With No photo ID to go with that credit card and check, the perpetrator begins to fidget nervously alerting the cashier to the likelihood of attempted fraud. And more often than not, the would-be perpetrator bolts and leaves to escape being caught.

It would be far less stressful and uncomfortable for your cashier to let you (and any would be perpetrator) get by easy than to do that simple credit check. And in reality, the cashier is saving you the time and stress of having to clean up the problems that a fraudulent transaction would cause you the legitimate card holder. So the next time you feel yourself getting irritated by a cashiers request for proof of ID, refocus yourself on the valuable service they are providing you, and smile and say "Thank you"!
