Your Body tells all
What do you think if the person with whom you are trying to have a serious conversation is constantly looking over your shoulder, turning away from you, and refusing to make eye contact? Well, the first thing that you probably think is that they are extremely rude and that there is a chance that they are looking for someone else to come along, but you should also realize that they are using body language to communicate with you. Granted, what they are communicating is that they are really not interested in what it is that you have to say, but you'll find that knowing this and understanding this is an integral part to the way that people communicate.
Body language is the communication that we can do without getting words in it at all. Everyone does it to some degree, although some people are more aware of it than others, and you'll find that in many ways, learning to read someone's body language is extremely handy in a number of different situations. For instance, in the vast majority of situations, you'll find that people who are lying will blink. This is generally thought to be indicative of the fact that they are trying to "hide" something.
You'll find that by being mindful about your body language can go a long way towards improving your relationship with the people around you. For instance, say that you are communicating with your young children. You'll find that if you squat or kneel down to be on their level that they will be a great deal more comfortable than if you were towering over them. What this is saying to them is that you are closer to being on the same level and that they can relax!
Your body language can also work for or against you when you are in a business setting. If you are in a business situation with someone important, never take your eyes from them and give them your full attention. Even if you are a multitasker and can quite easily listen to them while doing something else, make sure that you give them the respect of paying complete attention to them. Nothing says that you are bored with someone like doing something else, so take the time to make sure that you know what you are doing when it comes to the message that you are sending to the people around you.
For better body language, there are some habits that you should take right out of your body language "vocabulary." One thing that you should take some pains to avoid is eye rolling. When you roll your eyes, you are essentially dismissing everything that is being said around you, and no matter how subtle you think you are, it is a very noticeable gesture. You should also keep in mind the fact that you don't want to shift your weight from foot to foot, as this very obviously hints at discomfort, and that you shouldn't wrap your arms around yourself, as this is a gesture that states that you are feeling vulnerable.
Take some time to think about the body language of the people around you, and make sure that you are figuring out what you are saying back to them, as well!
