Constellation Scorpius/ Scorpio

Orion, Apollo, Diana and Antares

In the great Zodiac belt in the sky, Scorpio sits opposite the constellation Orion, the great hunter, which lies between Taurus & Gemini.

There are a couple of versions of the story of the demise of Orion. One points to the Scorpion, punishing him for his boastfulness of being "able to defeat any opponent". Another version says it was Apollo that sent the Scorpion to protect the chastity of his sister Artemis (Diana). Yet another version says it was still Apollo, but the motive was jealousy- Artemis and Orion were good friends, and brother Apollo was very posessive of his twin sister.

Either way, the Scorpion was set about as far away in the sky as it could be from Orion to prevent further conflict.

Antares: Heart of the Scorpion
Antares (Alpha Scorpii), a Red SuperGiant is the most visible star in this constellation, marking the heart of the Scorpion. The name comes from Greek for "against Ares(Mars)" because of its magnitude (brightness) and reddish color. Interestingly enough Scorpio's ancient and modern Vedic ruling planet is Mars (god of war), which is also the ruling planet of Aries. Both Aries and Scorpio are known for fiercely combative or competetive behavior.

Pluto: Lord of the Underworld

Glyphs for Pluto- Planet & Sign

The modern, Western Astrology ruler of Scorpio is Pluto, discovered in 1930 by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. (Mars is the Ancient/ Vedic ruler, also the ruling planet of Aries, but, hey why share a planet when you can have your own?)

Pluto (Greek= Hades), is lord of the Underworld and wealth (plutocrat, plutocracy). He rules the land of the dead, buried treasure and taxes. Once you were in Hades (also the name of the place for the Dead & lost souls), there was no going back. Only Mercury, the messenger, had a "Get out of Hades free" card. Pluto and Scorpio both require that we release an old form, experience a "death" of some form. In return you get something far greater than what you had before. This sure beats the alternative: a life gone necrotic and rotting from the inside out. Release the need for control and you gain new abilities, a new range of freedom and a new life. It's all about transformation. You are still you, and yet you are completely different...renewed.

There are at least three glyphs or symbols widely used for Pluto. (A man of many sides!)

Astronomy
One comes from the initials for Percival Lowell, who first theorized Pluto's existence. This is the only symbal used in astronomy.

Astrology
The other two are used in astrology. There is an American version and a European version. These two symbols are used only in astology, but astrologers will sometimes use the Percival Lowell glyph too.

All right, Scorpie, your planet has taken some hard knocks this year.
A small group of Yahoos over at the IAU have really mucked it up! Heck, if we can't even decide on a universal glyph, how can we agree on a definition? In this lens we will stick with "planet" because we are talking Astrology, and because I have a soft-spot in my heart for fellow Kansan Clyde Tombaugh, Astronomer and discoverer of Pluto. All I can say is thank goodness he passed on before all this whole hullabaloo!

It's so bad a new derrogative has sprung from the issue: "Plutoed" - to "pluto" is downgrade, demote or remove someone or something from a prestigious standing. Don't worry, Scorp-o, this is just a small phase in a larger cycle. You know who you are, and that is all that matters.

The problem is that, like you, Pluto is complex, mysterious and (sometimes) distant (but he likes to keep his partner close! Read on about Charon.). He is reluctant to reveal his secrets (if he ever does).
Just in the last year the Plutonian mini-system was discovered to have 2 small sattelites or moons!
His original "moon", Charon, is more of a partner in a binary plantary system. The two actually revolve around a focal point OUTSIDE of Pluto, centered somewhere between the two bodies.

The slowest, most distant and smallest of the planets, Pluto takes about 240 Earth years to come full circle around the Sun. (Though for a short stretch he does slip inside of Neptune's orbit.) It's safe to say, most of us will not live to see our own "Pluto return".

Scorpio Who's Who

Famous, infamous and interesting Scoripo Sun-Sign People

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Let's take a look at some well-known, and not-so-well known Scorpio people!

Scorpio folk are listed in the order of Day of Birth. Early Sorps (Oct 21/22) are first and then proceed through November. A brief bio is given. As this is a general overview of personalities, not an in-depth study of each individual; a selection of significant works are listed, which is by no means a complete catalogue of that person's life work.

Scorpio people are not your "take-em-or-leave-em type." Here you will find a group of individuals that seem to bring strong responses- "Oh, I just LOVE that guy!" or "Oh, I can't stand that so-and-so!"

"Cuspie Crichton"
This is the day the Sun makes its move from Libra into Scorpio. People born on these days, or more specifically at zero degrees of a sign are commonly referred to as "Cusps".
That makes it a little trickier to find folks that actually are true Scorpio on that day. One must have the exact time of birth to make that deterimination.

Planets in Scorpio:
Sun - and BARELY there at under 00 degrees, 09 minutes. A whole bunch of stuff in Libra. Though he may frequently come off more more like the Scales of Justice, he is really a Scorpion on the Soul level. One look at his titles will reveal his Scorpionic self.

Quotes:
"It's not easy to cut through a human head with a hacksaw."

"We all live every day in virtual environments, defined by our ideas."

"Readers probably haven't heard much about it yet, but they will. Quantum technology turns ordinary reality upside down."

Quotes:
"Art is a lie that makes us realize truth."

"It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child"

"Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children."

This is the companion catalog to the O'Keeffe exhibition at the Phillips gallery in Washington, DC, and is a wonderful volume on O'Keeffe whether or not you were fortunate enough to see this exhibition. What impressed me most about the exhibition (and the book) is how intelligently it was put together. It examines O'Keeffe's development as an artist by tracking both her philosphy and her influences, and some rarely shown works were chosen to represent this in the exhibition (and are reproduced in the book). Of all the books on O'Keeffe that I've read, and of all the exhibitions I've seen of her work, this one by far does the best job of explaining both the artist and her work.

Sun, Moon, Neptune, and ASC
(The Ascendant or Rising Sign - the "Outward appearance to the world") This certainly explains her other-worldly elfish appearance and music.

Quotes:
"The media like drama so it's 'She's in Hell.' And I'm like no, I had a bad day in February and a bad day in September but a brilliant summer."

"I find it very difficult to draw a line between what's sex(y) and what isn't. It can be very, very sexy to drive a car, and completely unsexy to flirt with someone at a bar."

"Football (Soccer) is a fertility festival. Eleven sperm trying to get into the egg. I feel sorry for the goalkeeper."

Music & Film by Bjork

Vespertine

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Ever since Björk's vital, effusive 1993 debut, her music has been increasingly intimate, gently private, and concerned with seclusion. It's typical then that Vespertine's first single is called "Hidden Place." The studious solitude is rewarding, though. Vespertine is a lush, gorgeous swell of midpace electronica, symphonic strings, and Björk's uniquely alien, spectral vocals. There are fantastical wonders here..."--Ian Gittins

Live Box

"Where to begin with such a musical treat such as this? Describing how much I adore this nifty little arrangement is near impossible because my love for Bjork blinds it so much. It was a few days after Christmas in 2003 when I saw Bjork's debut album "Debut" for sale and bought it on the off-chance that I would like it. Little did I know that I was about to embark on the most profoundly amazing musical experience of my life..."

Selmasongs: Dancer In The Dark (2000 Film)

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Inspired by the film Dancer in the Dark's Broadwayesque emotional sweep, Björk stretches herself with orchestral mood swings and a darker, more experimental palette. The result is the most difficult record she's made since her Sugarcubes days, but a few listens reveal the thrilling heart of a truly multifaceted and immensely brave composer. --Matthew Cooke

Quotes:
"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science."

"At the last dim horizon, we search among ghostly errors of observations for landmarks that are scarcely more substantial. The search will continue. The urge is older than history. It is not satisfied and it will not be oppressed."
