Scrabble Apple Word Game

The number of games that can be played using Scrabble Tiles seems to be expanding daily. For years we played Scrabble and then my sister and I began to make up our own games using the Scrabble Tiles. Now the Scrabble company has started producing more Scrabble Game spinnoffs. Have you played Banana Grams yet? What about Scrabble Apple?

Here is the original Scrabble game recommended by families, teachers and homeschoolers. This game of letter tiles played in crossword fashion has amused people for generations while helping to increase vocabulary and spelling. Come play a game of Scrabble today!

What can you do with the younger kids while you are working on vocabulary with the older ones?

Why put on Apples and Bananas by Raffi, of course. The younger ones sing and dance along while you play Apple Scrabble or Bananagrams with your older children.

I like to write the word for each fruit both on the back of each piece as well as in the space where the fruit goes to create a more print saturated environment and prepare children for reading and writing. As children begin to write these puzzle pieces become mini dictionaries or Wordwalls where they can quickly find and copy the words they need to spell.

Adding words or sentences written on paper and glued to felt tuns the Hungry Caterpillar into a learning center where your beginning readers can practice putting sentences in order or forming sentences with words related to the story and illustrated with the fruits like apples and bananas that the caterpillar eats in the story.

Add a couple of books and you now have a Literacy Bag which can be used as an alternate to homework for Kindergarten or first grade classrooms.

When I played Scrabble with my sister she always could spell better than I could so we changed the rules. Each person could have a dictionary and use it as much as they liked. It increased our vocabulary and there were no hard feelings.
