About the Sea Vixen

The de Havilland Sea Vixen was a British warplane which served in the navy up to the 1970's. It was launched from carriers, and had a unique profile with a twin boom, most similar to the Vampire jet fighter. Unlike the Vampire, its wings folded to save space on deck.

It took part in many military operations during its service life, and was capable of buddy-to-buddy refuelling.

This lens covers its history and the sole flying survivor.

About the de Havilland Sea Vixens

The fighter with folding wings

The Sea Vixen was a Navy aircraft rather than RAF, and was specifically designed to work aboard aircraft carriers.

deHavilland had already produced the Sea Venom which the Navy used successfully, so when they looked for a replacement, they chose the Sea Vixen, from the same maufacturer. (The RAF turned down the Sea Vixen, instead choosing the Javelin)

One of the first planes to have an all missile armament, the aircraft was exceptionally fast for its time with excellent performance.

One drawback was that the engines could produce more power than the airframe could take. During a display the prototype proved it could go supersonic - however the stresses were greater than the airframe could stand and the wings sheared during a turn. This led to development of a variant without folding wings (in 1955) which could take greater advantage of its power/weight ratio.

The Sea Vixen was retired in 1972, replaced with Phantoms on the Ark Royal and with various different aircraft on other carriers.

The image shows two Sea Vixens using their buddy-to-buddy refuelling system.

Technical Specifications

Technical details about the Sea Vixen

The aircraft was armed with four missiles as issues arose with cannon armament. Both wings were hinged and folded to save space on aircraft carriers. It was also capable of air-to-air buddy refuelling to increase its range.

Total production was 120 Mk 1's. An additional 30 Mark 2's were built, but the remaining Mk I's were rebuilt to Mk II standard.

Sea Vixen Survivors

G-CVIX

As well as static displays, there is one surviving flying Sea Vixen, operating by De Havilland Aviation. Now registered G-CVIX, the aircraft has performed in a number of shows including the Bournemouth Airshow.

Restored originally by De Havilland Aviation , she had a troubled season in 2009, when her owners went bankrupt and her pilot suffered a stroke. Fortunately he has recovered. Se has rejoined the display circuit in 2011, and hopefully will display long into the future.

The photos below are those the Flickr users have made available for public viewing:

A twin boom fighter

de Havilland made a group of three fighters, the Sea Venom, Sea Vixen and Vampire, which featured the distinctive twin boom tail. Each with its own distinct features, these were the backbone of the RAF during the fifties.

I very much like your lenses on ships and planes. I'm working on a movie about ships and planes during World War II. If you're interested, check it out at http://www.squidoo.com/the-battle-off-samar

Very interesting lens, an aircraft I'd never heard of before. We have built a lens on the novelist Nevil Shute who was also an aircraft engineer and worked for De Haviland before the war. He also helped design and build the R100 airship. squidoo.com/portsmouth-nevil-shute

Those twin boom Vampire and Vixens must have been quite something to see in action. Nice lens, 5 stars.
