Richland's Seattle Seahawk Day

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football team based in Seattle, Washington, USA. They are currently members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team, along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, joined the NFL in 1976 as expansion teams. Seattle is the only team to play in both the AFC (American Football Conference) and NFC Championship Games. The Seahawks have one Super Bowl appearance, losing 21-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL.

Franchise History

On June 15, 1972 Seattle Professional Football Inc., a group of Seattle business and community leaders, announced its intention to acquire an NFL franchise for the city of Seattle, WA.[1] Almost 2 years later on June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded the group an expansion franchise. On December 5, 1974, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle announced the official signing of the franchise agreement by Lloyd W. Nordstrom, representing the Nordstrom family as majority partners for the consortium. Sadly, Lloyd would die of a heart attack on January 20, 1976, just months before the Seahawks played their first game.[2]

On March 5, 1975 John Thompson, a former University of Washington executive, was hired as the general manager of the yet-unnamed team. The name Seattle Seahawks was selected on June 17, 1975 after a public naming contest which drew more than 20,000 entries and over 1,700 different names. Thompson recruited and hired Jack Patera, a Minnesota Vikings assistant coach, to be the first head coach of the new team. Patera was introduced as the new head coach at a press conference on January 3, 1976. The expansion draft was held March 30 through the 31, 1976, with Seattle and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers alternating picks for rounds selecting unprotected players from the other 26 teams in the league.[3] The Seahawks were awarded the 2nd overall pick in the 1976 draft, a pick they used on defensive tackle Steve Niehaus. The team took the field for the first time on August 1, 1976 in a pre-season game against the San Francisco 49ers in the then brand new Kingdome.

The Seahawks are the only NFL team to switch conferences twice in the post-merger era. The franchise began play in 1976 in the NFC West division but switched conferences with the Buccaneers after one season and joined the AFC West. This realignment was dictated by the league as part of the 1976 expansion plan, so that both expansion teams could play each other twice and every other NFL franchise once during their first two seasons. In 2002, the Seahawks were returned to the NFC West as part of an NFL realignment plan that gave each conference four balanced divisions of four teams each. This realignment restored the AFC West to its initial post-merger roster of original AFL teams Denver, San Diego, Kansas City and Oakland. See Wikipedia, Seattle Seahawks.

Seahawks Blue Tour Coming to Town

The Seattle Seahawks have chosen the Tri-Cities as one of four locations for the First Annual Seattle Seahawks "Blue Tour." The Seahawks Blue Tour will be held on Father's Day, Sunday, June 17, 2007, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Columbia Park near the Playground of Dreams. All Blue Tour events are free and open to the public. Other cities hosting the Blue Tour activities are Everett, Bellevue and Spokane.

The Blue Tour was created by the Seahawks to recognize their fans as their "12th Man" and to thank the communities for their passion and support. Components of the Blue Tour include an autograph session with a current player and Sea Gals, visits with mascot Blitz, and kid friendly competitions with inflatable toys in the Kids Zone. Children will have the opportunity to sign-up or renew their membership in the Seahawks Kids Club, and to compete against the clock in an obstacle course. Other contests include "Family Spirit," and "Name that Seahawk," and a Father's Day drawing will be held for a variety of prizes including an autographed football, a signed mini-helmet, and four game tickets and pre-game sideline tours.

In addition, the City of Kennewick will paint an NFL regulation-size football field in the park to accommodate the Gatorade Junior Training Camp, which has already reached its maximum of 300 participants.

The Blue Tour will also include two cheer and dance sessions, with instruction from the Sea Gals. The cheer/dance sessions are open to children aged 8-14 years, however it requires pre-registration. The cheer/dance sessions are limited to 50 participants per session. Mid-Columbia Gymnastics & Cheer will be accepting pre-registration on a first-come, first-served basis at 509.735.3861.

The Tri-Cities Visitor & Convention Bureau has partnered with the City of Kennewick, Mid-Columbia Gymnastics & Cheer, Richland High School, Lourdes Medical Center, Tri-City Sports Officials Association, and the Tri-Cities Sea Hawkers to bring this event to the Tri-Cities. For more information contact the Tri-Cities Visitor & Convention Bureau at 509.735.8486 ext. 232.
