Countdown to Digging crystals can begin
We're Here
You can see the Salt Plains coming up.
The name, Salt Plains, is derived from the thin layer of salt that covers the flats. This salt was used by Native American tribes and early pioneers who first settled the area. The plains are 7 miles in length and approximately 3 miles wide and lie within the boundaries of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.
Stay in the marked area.
You drive right out on it.
They have the driving area marked off out to the dig area.
Miles of Salt
There are miles and miles of dig area, but the park service only lets you dig in certain areas each year so more will grow where they dug last year.
Lots of holes.
See the holes where people have dug already this year
Pick a spot.
Take your dig gear out with you.
Here is my family getting a hole dug.
Don't go past the line.
Looking for crystals.
My grandkids are busy digging in their holes. You can see that they must not pass the fence line.
I found one!
Here's a small crystal.
Can you see the crystal, it's dirty and the same color as dirt almost, see it in the shadow.
See what I found.
My first crystal.
My grandson is holding his crystal, see the sideways hour glass, ( it almost looks like he has a mustache). We told him to get that t-shirt back on, Right NOW!
Everyone put their crystals in the box.
They need to be rinsed off.
Here is their box of crystals that we will take home and clean up. No one found a cluster. They are very, very fragile and break very easily.
An earlier hole.
Becoming salt covered already.
This was a hole from an earlier dig already filling up and covering over with salt.
The rules say don't fill in the hole as birds, in the bird sanctuary, will lay their eggs in the dirt pile.
