Storage Auctions | Making MONEY at Self Storage Unit Auctions
Yes, You can Make Money at Storage Locker Auctions
Self Storage Unit Auctions are almost an unknown secret (Well, maybe not any more, now that there are three cable TV reality shows about self storage auction). Storage Unit Auctions can provide you with an instant inventory for pennies on the dollar because a whole self storage unit can be bought for a couple hundred dollars or less. You could then sell the items acquired at the self storage auction on eBay, at a flea market, a garage sale or even on Craigslist for many times what you paid for them. It won't make you a million dollars but you can make some serious money with a little work.
In these difficult economic times, you may be seeking a good way to earn some extra spending money. And really, there are a lot of ways in which you might set about attaining this. In fact, one of the best ways that you could make yourself a few additional dollars is by attending several self storage auctions. Sure, this may seem a little bit complicated at first, but once you start to get your feet wet, you will realize that there is not much that goes into making a few extra dollars at your local self storage auctions. Simply follow the advice that you find here, and you are going to be well along your way before you even realize it.
There is something essential that you have to know before you begin to attend your local self storage auctions. One absolutely must show up with a truck. If you do not show up with a truck, you are going to get yourself into a world of pain and agony. Typically speaking, you are only going to be given twenty four hours to clean out the storage unit that you won in your auction. If you happen to win a five by five or a five by ten size unit, then this may not be much of a task at all. If, however, you end up winning something like a ten by thirty storage unit, then likelihood is that you are going to have quite a lot of things to get out of that self storage unit. In bringing a truck with you, you guarantee that you are going to be able to clear the unit out within the time frame that you are given by the self storage managers. You might want to consider showing up with a moving truck if you know that you are going to be bidding on the larger units.

The next bit of advice, here, is to be sure that you bring some cash money. Typically speaking, self storage managers are not going to accept checks or credit cards when it comes down to auctioned storage units. Be sure that you show up with a minimum of a couple hundred dollars in cash. The very last thing that you are going to want to do, here, is win a unit and then you can't make the payment and claim the unit.
Lastly, you are going to want to be sure that you are showing up at self storage auctions with a clear understanding of your strategy. The last thing that you are going to want to do, here, is allow yourself to be swept up in the contest of the auction. Don't bid on a unit simply because you want to beat someone else. Only bid on storage units that are going to make you money, and only bid when you assume that your bid does not exceed the value of the contents of the self storage unit. Sure, this advice may seem a bit fundamental, however it may very well prevent from spending an excessive amount of money on a unit that catches your eye.
Self storage auctions are a great way to earn few extra bucks. Basically be sure that you know what you are doing when you show up, as you are going to discover that your opposition can get rather brutal. With a little bit of planning and strategy, you can hang with the big boys.

A&E New Original Series "Storage Wars"
Another Reality Self Storage Auction TV Show
A&E presents the new original real-life series "Storage Wars," which follows four professional buyers and their teams as they scour repossessed storage units in search of hidden treasure. Part gamblers, part detectives, these auction pros have found everything from coffins to the world's most valuable comic book collection, paying as little as ten dollars for items valued in the millions. Each episode of "Storage Wars" follows a group of bidders as they get a quick peek inside the units, aided only by the beam of a flashlight. They then must assess on the spot if the unit is worth a bid and how high they will actually go to grasp the gold. The high-stakes fun begins as we see if the resulting buy is full of mostly trash or true treasure. Driven by Dan Dotson, one of the most successful and outrageous auctioneers in the country, the cast of buyers is as colorful and varied as the treasures they uncover.

And Now There Are Three, Three Storage Auction Reality Shows
TruTV has come out with their own storage auction reality show called Forbidden Storage. This makes three storage auction reality shows to start in the last three months. These shows are all similar with you watching the bidding on a self storage unit and then you get to see what was bought and some indication as to value.
This premier episode of Forbidden Storage was probably the lamest episode I have seen. Let's start with the title. Where did "Forbidden" come from. I believe that it was created to entice you to watch by trying to make it sound mysterious. On the other two self-storage auction reality shows, the buyers take the unusual, valuable, interesting items to a specialists for an opinion and estimate of value. On this Forbidden Storage they have some appraiser who goes through the stuff in the storage unit with the buyer and gives an estimate of value. Based upon watching other shows such as Antiques Roadshow, Pawn Stars, and American Pickers, authentication and valuation usually requires a specialist with knowledge in a particular area. Forbidden Storage did not prove that the appraisers in the episode were an expert in anything.
The commentary by the auctioneer was a little over the top. Though his job is to get the highest price possible, he does not have to tell us that he is trying to milk the buyers for all their money in a condescending way.
Because I have watched only been one episode, the regular buyers that the show follows is not clear. In this episode there was a confrontation between two buyers. You almost wonder if it was staged to add some interest to the show cause there was not much going on other wise.
Unless things on Forbidden Storage changes a lot, I don't think that this show will last long with the competition from two other networks.
Based upon my knowledge of storage auctions, in my opinion I believe that there is a lot of filming that has been cut in all the storage auction shows.. I also believe that some of the filming might be some what staged. If you are familiar with the geography of Southern California, why would somebody from Newport Beach or Vista drive to Victorville to attend a storage auction unless there was some inside information as to what was there.
There are rumors on the internet that Forbidden Storage may not show up in its current form on TruTV anytime soon.

Making Money at Self Storage Unit Auctions
How to Make Money With Self Storage Auctions

The first time I happened upon this somewhat unknown way of getting some really nice stuff, and sometimes real 'treasures' was when I stopped in at my local self storage unit to pay my bill, and happened to see an auction sign posted. I asked the lady what that was about and she told me that after a period of time they auction off the unit's contents for non payment of rent. So after finding out the particulars, I decided to check out the next auction that Thursday.
The day of the auction I got there just about the time the auction started. They had about 8 units to auction off that day, and although I had been to auctions before, the way they did these was a bit unique. What they would do is to go to the unit to be auctioned, unlock the unit, and literally give you about 5 seconds to poke your head in along with everybody else, look around, and then the bidding began. Usually the units would be auctioned off in about a minute or two at most.
I didn't buy anything that day, but later went to another the next month, and bought the contents of a small unit. Although there was a lot of junk in the unit, after going threw the lot, I found almost 300 fairly old comic books, mostly covered, and some jewerly, well worth the $175 I paid for it. I've since bought some other units, and have found some really nice stuff including some antique glassware, lots of nice furniture, and other treasures.
A couple of tips; as with any auction, until the auctioneer gets to know you and your way of bidding, make sure he knows that you've bid, and know what you're willing to pay before they start the auction. Don't get caught up in the moment, and wind up paying more than you wanted to.
Another thing to be aware of is that oftentimes you're bidding against people who are 'regulars' looking to buy for their auction house, or store, so don't be put off by the fact that one or two people seem to be outbidding everyone else. Take your time, start off with a smaller unit and you'll eventually get one. You may wind up with a lot of junk that you have to get rid of, or you could wind up with some real treasure.
I've heard many stories, but the one I like best was told to me by another bidder. He said that he was at an auction, and there was a medium sized unit that really looked like it had a bunch of garbage and wasn't going to bid. At the last moment he threw his hand up and bought the unit for $125. Later that evening, he got in there and started looking around and found some crates. When he opened the crates up, what he found was pieces of a motorcycle. After opening all the crates, he realized that he had a disassembled Harley Davidson Motorcycle!
You really never know what you're going to find. Happy treasure hunting!

How to Find a Self Storage Auction?
How to Find a Self Storage Unit Auction?
Self storage unit auctions are getting a lot of publicity with the creation and airing of three new reality shows on cable television dealing with self storage auctions. Storage auctions are a little like a treasure hunt. You never know what you might find in an abandoned storage unit as shown on these television shows.
There seems to be some misinformation out on the web about the best way to find a self storage auctions. This article will attempt to clear that up and give you a technique for maximizing your search for self storage auctions.
Self storage auctions are regulated by state laws and all state laws are a little different. Therefore, what is given here is a generalization. Before the internet, the self storage facility operator to complete the lien process to legality facilitate an abandoned storage unit auction for the non-payment of rent had to give a public notice. This usually meant publishing a notice of a pending auction in a newspaper of general circulation. With the demise of some newspapers and the rise of the internet some states are changing their laws, so you may want to check on the current laws in your state.
Some towns have lost their newspapers, and some of the newspapers used for publication are obscure like legal newspapers. Therefore, trying to find notices of self storage auctions can be a little like looking for a needle in a haystack.
A better method is to telephone the self storage facility and ask them when they have their auctions. You can find the self storage facility phone numbers in the printed yellow pages. A better way is to use an internet yellow pages like Superpages. By sorting them by a zip code, you can quickly get a concentration of storage facilities in a small area that you are interested.
If you anticipate doing storage unit auctions I would recommend that you transfer this information to a spreadsheet for easy management such as sorting by zip code or day of the auction. Other information to track could include when the auction is going to be held. This could be 10 am on the third Thursday of the month. Some storage facilities only hold an auction every couple of months. What type of auction it is: sealed bid, auctioneer, or operator auction (not all states allow operator auctions). It could be beneficial to obtain an auctioneer's name. Auctioneers sometimes specialize doing mostly self storage auctions and may have a website that publicizes their other up-coming storage auctions.
Other information that can be helpful is the name of the managers so that you can develop a relationship with them. You never know when they may give up some useful information about auctions that are coming up. The size of the storage facility could give an indication as to the number of potential storage auctions. The larger the storage facility the greater potential for a larger number of storage units going up for auction.
One thing to remember is that a renter of a storage unit can usually come in up to the time of the auction and pay the rent and fees due and that auction will not happen. Therefore, the day before or the morning of the auction, it is best to call the storage facility to verify there will be an auction and how many storage units will be going to auction. You may decide that you are not interested if there is only one storage unit going to auction. You also may be able to find out some information from the manager about the storage units going to auction such as the size of the units, how long the units have been rented and who rented it, a family, older couple, student. Some states require the storage facility operator to itemize the thing in the storage units that will be sold. This is sometimes required in the publication notice. At this same time some operators take a photograph of the storage unit for their records. This type of information could be invaluable for determine which storage auctions to attend.

Ebay Sellers - Here is a Little Secret.
Get an Instant Inventory of Stuff for Pennies on the Dollar!
Have you run out of inventory to sell on your eBay auctions because you have sold all the excess stuff from you house? One popular method to replenish this inventory is to frequent the garage sales, thrift shops and try to buy stuff at a good price to sell. This could yield a couple dozen of items costing a couple hundred dollars over a day. What if you could acquire a whole closet or garage full of stuff for only a couple hundred dollars or less? This is what occurs at self storage unit auctions every day.
FOR NEWBIES - At most self storage unit auctions you are buying the whole thing, the whole kit and caboodle that is in the storage unit. This includes the unseen treasures and the trash (but one persons trash is another persons treasure). You can not rummage through the boxes or go into the unit before bidding. You are allowed only to look inside. Some buyers bring high power flashlights with them to help light up the back of the unit. This is especially helpful if the self storage unit is located in an inside hallway where light is not very good to begin with.
After you successfully win the unit you bid on, everything in the unit is yours (some self storage facilities request personal papers ((birth certificates, pictures, diplomas, etc) be sorted which are stored for a period of time to be claimed). You will be required to pay the auction price, usually in cash (so bring lots of cash). You may be required to put up a cleaning fee to ensure that the unit is cleaned out satisfactory. You may not be allowed to use the dumpster at the storage facility for the trash you find in the unit. This is because if they allowed 10 or, 20 people from the auction to use the dumpster, it would fill up and extra dumpster pickups cost somebody money. The storage facility may give you a couple of days to clean out the self storage unit. So if you are interested in the large units, you may want to bring a big truck or trailer. You may need a lock to lock the unit when you are not there so bring one along.

Did you Know You Can Make Money with Self Storage Unit Auctions???
This picture of one of the more promising self storage units that I have seen going up for auction due to non-payment of rent. The storage unit shown on the right is 10 feet by 20 feet deep in size. That is the size of a one car garage. As you can see, the stuff is pack in there pretty tight.
The story behind this self storage unit is that the elderly lady who owned this stuff died and the heirs were not interested in paying the rent due and claiming the goods in the storage unit. Looking from the door, some of the things I was able to see in this self storage unit are the refrigerator, a washer and dryer, a barbeque, an inexpensive pool table that has been take apart, some sort of weight exercise machine that has been taken apart, some garden tools in a trash can, an automotive parts cleaner basin, numerous wooden chairs, a box of books, a couple of coolers, small snow blower and an aluminum ladder. AND... these are only the some of the things I could see. Who knows what is in a box on the ground against the back wall in this self storage unit. Could it be jewelry, rare books, old china and the list could go on. Who knows what is in the back 5 to 10 feet of this self storage unit except the buyer of this unit and the lady who owned, died and may have forgotten about it anyway?

Want some Money Saving Tips About Self Storage?
What can you do with the stuff you have bought?
Keep it or Sell it for Money.
You could rent the self storage unit the stuff is in for a month to give you some time to sort through the stuff. The stuff you do not want you could sell to antique dealers, second hand furniture dealers, an auction house, at garage sale, flea market, swap meet, on eBay, or even on Craigslist.org. The other stuff you can donate to the Salvation Army, Goodwill (and take a tax deduction) or take to the dump.

- People planning to rent a self storage unit need to find out number of things first about what a provider offers. This must be a priority so that you avoid any regrets later on. Among the important features you have to look into are the accessible location, unit sizes available, security system in place, customer access to units and the fees. Customers these days have many sizes of self storage units to choose from. All you need is to pick the ideal one where your belongings will fit in. self storage glasgow
