The Senseo SL7810/65 coffee machine
The Senseo coffee machine is a great looking little unit, and at $65 then it is great value to. This is a pod coffee machine like a Keurig, which means you have to buy little pods to use in it which contain the ground coffee that you are going to brew. You are going to pay more for the pods than just using pre-ground coffee, but you are paying for the convenience of being able to just fill it up with water, pop in a pod, press a button or two, and less than a minute later have a hot cup of coffee waiting for you, then you can just throw the used pod away.
The Senseo focuses more on just making one 4oz cup at a time, but you can pop two pods into a larger pod holder (included with it) and brew either two 4oz cups or one 8oz mug. You don't get any controls to fiddle with the brewing process, the pods have a set amount of coffee in them and they have set the brewing process to take best advantage of that so they don't want you changing it! The positive reviews on Amazon show that they seem to have set the brewing process up right.
The machine is great to look at, it isn't square like a typical coffee maker so you can be proud to show it off when making a cup for a friend. It is very popular at the moment, and you can get great tasting coffee pods from Douwe Egberts and a few other manufacturers, and you can even find some espresso and tea pods too!
The machine has great reviews on Amazon with nearly 85% of reviewers giving 4 or 5 stars, so if you want a great tasting cup of coffee without any fuss, and you don't mind paying a bit extra for the privilege, then this is a great choice.
Who is behind the Senseo?
Senseo is a trademarked brewing system marketed by the Dutch subsidiary of the Sara Lee Corporation, Philips and Douwe Egberts. The system was first introduced in the Netherlands in February of 2001, and is now well known around the world for its unique coffee pod system, and ease of use. After Senseo was introduced in the Netherlands, it quickly caught on in popularity and was then marketed in Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, the United Kingdom, the United States, and finally in Australia.
In 2007, a new "generation" of the original Senseo machine was introduced and further advanced the coffee pod technology. This new version was even more user friendly, allowed the user to adjust the height to hold larger cups, had a larger water reservoir to allow for different amounts of hot water used per cup, and had a new light indicator feature that showed whether or not there was enough water left in the machine for two cups of coffee, rather than the one cup feature on the original machines.
Since this new machine took off so quickly, Senseo introduced the Senseo Latte Select machine in 2008. This machine allowed users to easily make lattes at home, and came equipped with a separate reservoir for milk. The latte machine still used the original coffee pods; however it could brew three different types of coffee drinks with foam milk, including the Latte Macchiato, Café Latte, and the Cappuccino. True coffee aficionados were not impressed since the machine can only brew regular coffee (albeit with three different strength settings), not real espresso as should be used to make the above mentioned drinks.
Senseo continued to improve the machine and in 2009 introduced Senseo Quadrante. This new machine featured a "brick-like design" to hold the original coffee pods. The Quadrante also offered a larger water reservoir and three different cup holder settings for various sized cups or mugs.
Senseo is proud to offer several different coffee blends in their pods including: regular, mild, mocha, and a dark roast. They have recently introduced a decaffeinated pod as well. There are also special blends available such as, Kenya, Brazil, and Columbian, which are blended from Arabica coffee. These special blends are more expensive than the regular pods.
Senseo has also started to offer flavored pods called Rio de Janeiro, Vienna, and Sevilla and Marrackech. Specialized pods for the European market include: café choco, espresso, and cappuccino. The company has recently introduced a "Hot Choco" pod in the Netherlands and Belgium, a "Guten Morgen" breakfast blend in Germany, a "Maison du Café" and "Noir Subtil" in France, and a "Caffe Crema" in Italy.
