Sensorpedia: Social Networking for Information Sharing

Sensorpedia is a program initiated by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to utilize Web 2.0 social networking principles to organize and provide access to online sensor network data and related data sets.

Sensorpedia is based on the same underlying social networking and collaboration principles used by popular web sites such as Wikipedia, Squidoo, Google Maps, Twitter, and Facebook.

Instead of networking users based on mutial personal interests, Sensorpedia networks users based on mutual information interests. It provides near-real-time collaboration among communities with requirements to share sensor information.

Take a Sneak Peek at the Sensorpedia Beta!

Sensorpedia is still in a limited beta testing phase. But we're happy to announce a new Sneak Peek at the application. The Sneak Peek provides read-only access for non-beta users to search and explore the data currently in Sensorpedia. Contribution of data is currently still limited to beta testers. Sign up for our Sensorpedia mailing list to be notified when we move to open beta.

Paving the Cowpaths

Sensorpedia leverages key "standards" that developers and users are already adopting. Some standards - a fraction of those that are developed each year - stimulate innovation and are readily adopted by industry and the online community. These standards can be adapted for specialized, secure applications. Sensorpedia seeks to formalize how these standards are applied to the area of sensor data sharing.

Share, Tag, Mix, Find, and Use Sensor Data from Around the World

Key Sensorpedia Functionality

  • Intuitive interface for easy exploration and contribution

  • Textual and geospatial data search

  • Subscribe to data layers using Atom and GeoRSS

  • Tag-based classification system for sensor data

  • Social networking framework for managing authenticity, access control, and data provenance

  • Application Programming Interface (API) using RESTful web services to facilitate information "mashups"

  • Flexible architecture to support a wide variety of sensor types and application use cases
