Who is this Seth Godin fellow?

Who would have though that the creator of Squidoo is also an avid publisher, reader, speaker, entrepreneur, marketer, and purple cow?

For all of you out there looking to get the key points from Seth Godin's books, this lens is for you. I am going to break down each on of Seth's books by chapter, and provide the key take aways and important points. I was actually just going to do this on a notepad for myself but I thought I can share some valuable insights with the world wide web.

This is not meant to be a substitute for Seth's books but a complementary resource and reference. All I ask is that if you do purchase one of Seth's books, please purchase them from here, show your support of my hard work and of Seth Godin's books. Seth's writing style and real world examples make the books worth every penny.

I hope you enjoy this lens. I am always open to ideas/comments/suggestions. If you have a great marketing idea or story please let me know.

Meatball Sundae (2007)

Part 1 - Thinking About The Meatball Sundae

Before, During, and After

Before advertising hundreds of thousands of companies were the same

During advertising companies looks like they do today; average products for average people
After advertising companies will be radically changed

The Foundations of the New Marketing (the trends)

  • Direct Communication and commerce between producers and consumers

  • Consumers and independent authorities will have more of a voice

  • Companies will need authentic stories as the number of sources increases

  • People have a low attention span due to clutter and noise

  • The long tail

  • Outsourcing

  • Google and the dicing of everything

  • Infinite channels of communication

  • Direct communication and commerce between consumers and other consumers

  • The shifts in scarcity and abundance

  • The triumph of big ideas

  • The shift from "how many," to "who"

  • The wealthy are like us

  • New gatekeepers, no gatekeepers

Old marketing is just interrupting people with ads about boring everyday products; it's about targeting the masses.

New marketing is about targeting the people that matter and creating interactions among communities with similar interests. The best way to do this is by telling stories and getting their permission to deliver direct messages.

  • We Make What We Can Sell

  • If you want your business to grow, satisfy the people who can best leverage your ideas
  • Marketers spread ideas
  • Tell stories people want to hear and belive
  • Translate emotion into action
  • Close the Sale
  • Make things people want to buy

Use the best medium to reach the right people at the right time

    Marketing Tools That Work
Align customers with sales force and distribution method

It's all about successful marketing tactics

    The One Big Insight
New marketing doesn't demand better marketing, it demands better products, better services, and better organizations
