A book club you don't have to work around your busy schedule, join in anytime!
For everyone who loves to curl up with a good book, this lens is for us to review and recommend books for each other to read.
Each month I'll feature one book that I've read from the recommended selection and give my review. However I don't want this lens to just be my opinions, add your own reviews and vote on next month's book.
Book review for August
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
The Last Lecture
Amazon Price: $12.07 (as of 09/05/2008)
Randy Pausch lost his battle with cancer last month however he has left behind a legacy and an inspiring message with his book The Last Lecture that has touched the hearts of millions. He gives us simple, practical advice for how to live a better life and realize your childhood dreams, things we may already know but tend to forget. My favorite message from the book is when he talks about how brick walls are not there to stop us but to see how badly we want something.
So often we get caught up in daily nuisances and negative thinking, he reminds us to cherish every single day and go after what makes us happy. I recommend you buy the book and a few extra copies to give to the ones you love.

The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios by Yann Martel
The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios
My Review
From the Author of one of the most amazing books I've read "the life of Pi". (Man Booker Prize winner) is this collection of short stories. They are all well written, I especially enjoyed the Helsinki story. His way of writing always allows you to be a part of the story, I did like this collection however it didn't grab me the way Life of Pi did. Still, I recommend this book..would make a great book for the beach.

The Cleft by Doris Lessing
The Cleft: A Novel
My Review
I read this book in 2 days, completely absorbed with the journey as we are taken through the history of the Clefts and how the arrival of men changed their way of life. We're also given snippets of the life of the Senator and how he tries to piece together the ancient knowledge passed down through time. It really made me think about what our true history is and all of the lost scrolls and memories of our ancestors. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it for your summer book list.

I'm glad I found this lens. I always appreciate good recommendations. I've read The Poisonwood Bible and The Secret Life of Bees, and loved both. I hope this means we're on the same wavelength as to what constitutes a good book! I'll be looking for more of the books you review here. Posted July 09, 2008 |
