THIS MONTH'S FOCUS: WEDDING MUSIC

Does the idea of going to the music store to find yet another needed piece of music bring pleasant images? Does getting cut off in traffic, spending valuable time and/or gas money appeal to you? Are you tired of finally making it to the store only to be told, "Sorry, we don't carry that" or "We don't have that in stock right now, but we can order it for you. It'll only take 1-2 weeks to come in?" Personally, I am pretty much done with that scene. I buy the majority (95%) of my sheet music needs online due to frustration with the traditional way of buying music. I have been playing piano since I was three, and obviously, have gone through tons of music literature. While I am classically trained, and am in the process of completing my Masters in Music Performance, I listen to all genres. On a regular basis I search for sheet music for both of the churches that I accompany. In addition, I am constantly on the lookout for music for my piano students, weddings, classical repertoire, and ensembles. I thought it might be helpful to some of you out here to have a good, working list of sites which could be bookmarked and used to locate sheet music. I use all of the sites and resources on this lense on a regular basis, have had little to no problems with, and offer fine quality products and service. What makes me qualified to recommend anything? I have been playing piano professionally since I was twelve. I accompany no less than two churches on a regular basis, as well as instruct privately. I am well versed in solo repertoire and have performed with ensembles, choral groups, and both instrumental/vocal soloist. My specialties include accompanying, composing, arranging, digital recording, and of course, sight-reading. There are obviously many versions of sheet music, regular mp3s, and performance tracks of wedding music out on the web and in the stores. In order to create this lense, I had to listen to some really, really cheezy sounding music and sort through some of the worst imaginable sheet music. What's Most Popular for Weddings Right Now? 


Most popular with brides this year is "Con Te Partiro", as performed by Andrea Bocelli. It was originally recorded on Bocelli's album Romanza. I have bought this album myself several times, even giving it as a bridal gift by including it in a honeymoon gift basket. The music is absolutely gorgeous and wonderful mood setter for the couple, whether they speak Italian or not. Recommended Wedding Music Recordings 

What are music cds, mp3s, and performance tracks doing on a lense that is supposed to be about sheet music? I can't tell you how many times I have heard about and experienced catastrophes occuring at weddings because either the vocalist failed to show up, the musician called in sick, and/or the sound system died,etc. Always, always, always have a backup whenever you accompany a wedding. Go the extra mile for heaven sake and save the day for the nervous couple. Not only is it the right thing to do...people will never forget you for saving the day. My main rules of thumb are to always do more than what they expect of you and ALWAYS have a back-up plan. In addition, there are others landing on this lense that may be having a wedding in an outdoor setting where it is impossible to transport a piano, organ,etc. to their location. I have, on several occasions, recorded music for couples who are having weddings in lovely outdoor locations. We just simply time the music for everything, allowing extra time of course, and then record according to what has been planned. This works well to record your playing for accompanying a flautist, violinist,etc. for the same reason.

Classical Sheet Music Downloads at Virtual Sheet Music

Public Domain Sheet Music 

What is public domain music? Public domain songs are songs that are not affected by copyright fees. These are usually songs that are pre-1923 whose copyrights have expired, or where there has never been a copyright applied for in the first place. These include classical songs, hymns, children's songs, old Christmas carols etc.

Not All "Free Sheet Music" Is in the Public Domain. There are numerous websites out there which offer free sheet music however, not all of it is in the public domain. The owners of these sites are infringing on the copyrights of the owners of the music and you will too if you download it. One simple rule of thumb that you can use: any music on these websites published after 1963 is very likely not in the public domain. If it was published in 1963 or before, it could be in the public domain or it could be copyrighted. Read the fine print! *

Duke University Libraries Digital Collections
This database contains listings of the approximately 20,000 pieces of sheet music in the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library of Duke University. The bulk of the collection dates from about 1830 to 1930 and includes material selected for Historic American Sheet Music, part of the Library of Congress American Memory Project. Most, but not all, music was published in the United States, but there are a significant number of English, German, and Viennese items as well. More Viennese publications from the Weinmann Collection may be found in the Duke Online Catalog. A sample of lyrics have been transcribed and are available in the American Song Lyrics database.

This public domain music website, which has been online since February 16, 2006, boasts 14,171 works and some 26,336 scores. I have been using this website for quite a while, mostly for academic research related to my music degree.

The collection spans the years 1780 to 1980, but its strength is its throrough documentation of nineteenth-century America through popular music. The collection is especially strong in music spawned by military conflicts from the War of 1812 through World War I, and minstrel music is also well-represented. Other topics include music about the circus; dance; drinking, temperance, and smoking; fraternal orders; presidents; romantic and sentimental songs; schools and colleges; and transportation.

This site contains musical scores, movies and sound files. Most Project Gutenberg eBooks are in the public domain in the US, so tend to be from items published prior to 1923. The Performing Arts Reading Room: Music Division
The Performing Arts Reading Room is the service point for the broad and diverse collections of the Music Division at the Library of Congress. Numbering approximately 12 million items and spanning more than 800 years of Western music history and practice, these holdings include the classified music and book collections, music and literary manuscripts and related artifacts, music-related periodicals and microforms, copyright deposits, and five collections of musical instruments.

The Music Division also holds more than 500 named special collections in music, theater, and dance, which are remarkably disparate in size, content, and format. It should be noted with regard to the performing arts of theater and dance, only limited reference collections for these subjects are held in the reading room; most published works in these disciplines are located in the general collections of the Library. Those materials may be requested through the Main Reading Room in the Jefferson Building or the Business or Science Reading Rooms located on the fifth floor of the Adams Building.
