Where The Sidewalk Ends

My Review

I love this book. It is the sort of book that an adult and a child can enjoy. The quirky word choice, and subject matter, is perfect. The illustrations are so simple, yet they hold so much personality, and often add to the poem's tone and content. This is certainly a book that should be on the shelf of ANY home.

Come in . . . for where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. You'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist.

Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings is at once outrageously funny and profound.

Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me too,

Went for a ride in a flying shoe,
"Hooray!"
"What fun!"
"It's time we flew!"
Said Ickle Me, Pickle Me,
Tickle Me too.

Shel Silverstein's readings of a few poems from the book together make for an amazing CD. And by a "few poems", I mean 47!

His voice is stunning, and his choices in tone and tempo, not to mention his added noises, make this recording a memorable experience.

(It is not by accident that his books that are not intended for children are left off of this list. I just think that since this book is considered a book for children, I don't want to specifically recommend something that wouldn't be.)
