Shel Silverstein at a Glance
Sheldon Alan "Shel" Silverstein (September 25, 1930 ? May 10, 1999) was an American poet, singer-songwriter, musician, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children's books. He sometimes styled himself as Uncle Shelby, especially for his early children's books.
Silverstein confirmed that he never studied the poetry of others and therefore developed his own quirky style: laid-back and conversational, occasionally employing profanity and slang.

- Lovely lens on Mr. Silverstein. My favorite works by him are "The Giving Tree", "The Missing Piece" and the sequel, "The Missing Piece Meets The Big O". Very touching and poignant - they made me think for days on end.

- The interesting thing about Shell is that he has two voices. One for children. And the other is quite adult. At one point I had a CD of his "adult" poetry and I found it quite amusing and surprising to be coming from the guy who wrote Where The Sidewalk Ends.
