Shirley's Curls

Shirley's mother made sure she had exactly 52 ringlets, situated just so, before every take on the movie set.

How to Make Shirley Temple Curls

(But, Shirley didn't have a curling iron!)

I have searched high and low for the best instructions for curling hair to get a good, Shirley Temple ringlet look. This is probably the best video I have found about how to use a curling iron to achieve ringlets.

Of course Shirley's mom didn't have a curling iron. She used pincurls which, if you have some time and some bobby pins, I'd recommend to try for little girls. Curling iron burns on the scalp don't make for a happy little Shirley Temple look-a-like!

Thanks so much to lensmaster GypsyOwl for these instructions on how to make Shirley Temple curls: "My Grandmother used strips of fabric to give me the Shirley Temple look. Strips were about 1 inch wide and twice as long as my hair. She would have me hold one end on top of my head, then she would wrap a small portion of my hair around the fabric strip (from top to ends), and then wrap the rest of the strip (from end to top). Then she would tie a bow with the end I was holding and the end that she had just wrapped upward. The curls lasted a long time (until I washed my hair again) and it was adorable."

I had a cousin whose hair was very curly, kinky, actually., and her mother made those curls every day. My mother tried, but my hair was too straight. I think I was the lucky one of the two. But great lens, I really appreciate the trip down memory lane. *****

Thanks for the suggestion, Brenda! I do have Shirley Temple movies on my Shirley bio lens, but I've added a couple of links on this page to make them easier to find.

Great fun, Susan! I am not sure if it would be suitable or not but it definitely would be theme appropriate -- have you thought of adding Shirley Temple movies (DVDs) or CDs?
