Rebuilding New Orleans
Ranked #19,004 in Travel & Places, #443,279 overall
New Orleans District
New Orleans is often referred to as the Big Easy. It is known best for its Bourbon Street atmosphere, creole food, streetcars, the birthplace of jazz and unfortunately hurricane Katrina.
The city of New Orleans was reduced from a city population of over 450,000 residents to (as of the 2007 census), a little over 270,000.
Most of the residents living in New Orleans had evacuated before the storm, but many still remained in the city. The city was able to withstand the impact of Hurricane Katrina, but the levees in New Orleans did not.
The New Orleans Levees were not strong enough to hold the massive amount of water coming in from the Gulf Coast and over 80% of the city was flooded. The residents that remained in the city were rescued to the Louisiana Superdome and the New Orleans Morial Convention Center.
New Orleans is currently still in a rebuilding mode as more and more of what made the city great is coming back. Money that was set aside for Hurricane Katrina victims still has not been spent, because of the amount of money that was wasted and mishandled when hurricane victims were given prepaid debit cards following the hurricane.

Testimonials
"The reason for my e-mail . . . As much as you would like people to request the other tours, I must tell you that I feel EVERYONE should have to take your Post-Katrina tour. There is no way to possibly imagine what has happened there without visiting. I will be in eternal disbelief. The average visitor who just visits the French Quarter and Bourbon Street don't really 'get' it and the media certainly does not portray it accurately. It is shocking what we learned and saw. My husband and I were extremely moved by the tour and Jenny's vast knowledge and information. Anger is my strongest feeling along with sadness, disbelief at our government's bureaucratic bs, and finally despair. Hope is what I would like to end up with."
"This was amazing; this was educational and inspirational. It also motivates us to get involved. Rock on New Orleans! We're with you!"
New Orleans Cemetery Tour
"If you decide that you want to visit New Orleans after the reconstruction, this book will be a valuable guide to the cemeteries. You'll have pre-Katrina photographs to compare to the post-Katrina reality. You will also know where to visit to see the resting places of the famous, such as Confederate president Jefferson Davis."

My Katrina Stories
I was living in Hattiesburg, Ms in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina came through. It was an awesome force of nature. We sat on the back porch of my girlfriends grandmothers house and watched as the wind ripped through 50 foot trees like they were toothpicks. It completely wiped out phone lines, cell phone towers, and water systems.
During the aftermath there was nothing to do but bake in the hot August sun. If you have ever been in Mississippi during August without an air conditioner, you know how miserable it can get.
You could not drive your car because there was too much debris on the road, and even if you could there was no where to get gas. Luckily our house was not destroyed.
The amount of work that it took to rebuild our area was more than anyone could predict. The Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans did a great job in rebuilding, and bringing people back to the area.
