The Siamese Cat is the Premier Cat Breed
The Siamese cat is the premier cat breed as it has contributed to the development of many of the modern cat breeds.

- has almond shaped eyes which slant towards the nose (ie, the eyes are Oriental). Their eyes are a vivid blue;
- is a a medium sized cat which has a long and svelte but muscular body with long legs and a a very short coat which is fine in texture and glossy;
- has a tubular body with long slim legs with the back legs slightly longer than the front legs and small oval shaped paws;
- a long tail which tapers to a point and which should not have any kinks; and
- a colour pattern which consists of a coloured face, ears, feet and tail and a lighter solid shade that is even in colour over the body.

The Siamese Colour Pattern
The Siamese coat pattern is created by pigment-restricting genes that are sensitive to heat. When the body heat rises above certain temperatures, pigment formation is reduced. However, as the extremeties or points of the cat are cooler than the rest of the body, the extremeties produce pigment in the normal way. When kittens are born, they are a pale colour all over because their bodies have been at a constant high tempertaure in the womb. Once born and a kitten's body cools down sufficiently, it will begin to develop colouring on its extremeties. Kittens in the same litter will develop pigmentation at differently with some having more dense pigmentation than others. This is because pigmentation genes operate on an individual basis. As cats get older, their extremeties become cooler and as a result a Siamese cat's extremeties will become darker as they get older.
Because of the sensitivity to heat, Siamese in warm climates will be lighter coloured than Siamese in colder climates.
In Britain, there are presently 34 colours varieties recognised for Siamese. The 34 colours are divided into 2 categories: solid, ie those where the points are all the same colour; and patterned. Of the 34 colour variants, only 4 (seal, blue, chocolate and lilac) are natural with the rest having been introduced as a result of crossing the Siamese with other breeds. Many breeders of the Traditional Siamese accept only the 4 naturally occurring colours.
