Because Siegfried has been on both sides of allegiance, he knows how both sides work, because he was both Nightmare and himself. With this knowledge not only does it gives him an upper hand in the fight against Nightmare, but also that history tears him up so much that it drives him to take the power that was given to him (Soul Calibur) and do things with it that originally were impossible, and use it to hope fully defeat his Dark side (Nightmare).
