Fire Safety's Top 10
Top 10 tips for assuring the safety of your family during a fire.
Here are the top 10 tips for fire safety:
1. Plan your Escape Route - Be sure to have two ways out of every room so that you do not become trapped. Have a designated safe place to meet the rest of the family.
2. Don't forget the windows - Be sure that windows open freely and security bars can be opened. If it's a child's room, make sure THEY can open the windows.
3. Upstairs safety - If bedrooms are upstairs, be sure there is an escape ladder in each room and have your children practice using them.
4. Take a feel - During a fire, smoke and darkness will be present. Getting around in your home may be difficult. Take turns blindfolding family members and let them feel their way to the exits. Try making this a game!
5. 911! What's your emergency? - All children should know when and how to call for help. Go over the rules and have them practice on a phone that is unplugged or use a toy phone.
6. Smoke detectors can mean life or death - as you'll see in the videos, sometimes the right smoke detector can mean all the difference in the world. However, smoke detectors are useless if the batteries are dead so check them regularly and replace them when needed. Do NOT disconnect a smoke alarm because it's malfunction%u2026if it's bad, replace it.
7. Keep Out! - Teach your children that once they are out and in their safe place, stay there. When firefighters arrive, tell them if someone else is inside the home. Do NOT go back in.
8. Use your Senses - Teach children how to check the doors to see if they are hot. A hot door means there could be fire on the other side and you should find another way out. Also, use a towel or cloth to cover your mouth and for grabbing things to protect from burns.
9. Stop, Drop, & Roll - When clothing catches on fire many people panic. Teach your children the proper procedure for putting the fire out.
10. Practice makes perfect! - All the planning and tips are useless if you don't put them to work. Practice your escape plan regularly%u2026at least twice a year but once a month would be better.
Be safe and prepare your family!

- It's great to see your passion for fire safety. A home fire protection method that is gaining more and more attention is residential fire sprinklers. This is the focus I have taken to raise awareness of the benefits of fire sprinklers and clear up the many myths about them. If you would like to team up to help further promote home fire protection just let me know. Thanks.
