Signature Auction 5004
This auction will begin with a very strong showing of works on paper, including such artists as James Jacques Tissot, Alexander Calder, Joan Miro and Willem de Kooning. Of special note are three insightful portraits by Andy Warhol featuring Jacqueline Kennedy in the moments before her husband was killed and at her husband's funeral. They were arguably the culmination of Warhol's exploration of the intersecting themes of celebrity and death, themes that are still resonant today.
The assortment of European works includes lovely portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence and Frederic Leighton, Modernist sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle, Amedeo Modigliani and Arnaldo Pomodoro, and a tiny Luminist jewel from Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. A featured item in this portion of the auction is a large canvas rendering the Martyrdom of St. Andrew by Carlo Dolci and his workshop. This richly-colored scene is one of several treatments the artist made of this subject; the others can be found in major collections around the world.
Heritage is known for its excellent selection of American works, and this auction is no exception. Beautiful canvases by William Keith, Joseph Rusling Meeker, Eanger Irving Couse, William Merritt Chase, Edgar Alwin Payne and George William Sotter dominate this category, as well as a large group of Western and Texas art from such notables as Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell, Robert Wood, Julian Onderdonk and Porfirio Salinas.

Calder, Alexander: American sculptor, painter, and designer, 1898-1976. Calder graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1919 with a degree in mechanical engineering. After taking classes at the Arts Student's League, he became a freelance artist and illustrator, and published a book titled Animal Sketching. In the 20s, Calder began traveling to Paris, becoming influenced by the work of Klee and Miro. In 1930, after visiting Piet Mondrian's studio, he began to create abstract constructions incorporating biomorphic forms, specifically with variations on the mobile, which he is most known for. Calder divided his time between trips abroad, and his farm in Roxbury, Connecticut, and as his commissions grew more frequent, his mobiles became increasingly gigantic. Examples are Flamingo, the stabile at Federal Center Plaza in Chicago, and La Défense, at the Rond Point de La Défense Métro station in Paris.

This dynamic painting in gouache relates closely to a series of larger-scale oil paintings entitled Cosmic Spring (National Gallery, Prague) which were breakthrough works in Kupka's career as a pioneering abstractionist. In this work and others dating from the mid-1910s through the early 1920s, the Czech modernist became dazzled by the phenomenon of nature's energy. By the mid-1920s, this interest shifted from nature's energy into an intense exploration of the energy generated by machines. Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000.

A son of an immigrant coal miner and arguably the most influential visual historian of the twentieth century, Andy Warhol was born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Warhol moved to New York City in 1949 where he became a successful illustrator, painter, film-maker, and author and kept the company of socialites and street people alike. In a meaningful departure from Expressionism, Warhol embraced popular culture and commercial processes. In the 1960s he switched from painting to silkscreen prints which were produced serially, often in bright colors with off-set effects. This process allowed Warhol not only to create art out of the mass-produced but also to mass produce the art itself. The series of silkscreens produced in the 1960s ranged from the banal to the tragic with images of soup cans and Brillo pads, celebrity portraits of Marilyn, Jackie, and Elvis, and electric chairs and guns.
This portrait captures one of the most traumatic events in postwar America and marks the development of instant news, mass emotion and mass reaction. Rather than a common voyeur, Warhol created a statement of American culture which is just as poignant today as it was in 1966. This image of Jackie Kennedy standing with dignity as the body of her husband was laid to rest before a throng of photographers and television reporters reflects classic Warhol cynicism of mass media. The visual imagery, based on newspaper photos rather than a firsthand account, is more a commentary on how the media represented the event than a study of Jackie's experience. The choice of Jackie Kennedy is also illustrative of Warhol's obsession with celebrities and how the media suppresses their ability to retain individuality and humanity. Estimate: $20,000 - $25,000.

During the course of the second decade of the 20th century, John Marin became recognized for his abstract landscapes rendered most often in watercolor. As Sheldon Reich noted in his essay that accompanied the 1963 John Marin exhibition in Tucson where the present work was shown, Marin devised his own pictorial language to express his view of nature. "Upon the large forms of earth, water and sky, deftly and luminously brushed in, Marin suggests their planes without becoming involved with modeling in the traditional sense. Most important is the calligraphy that plays against these broad color areas--here suggesting trees, there, waves, and always symbolic of the movement inherent within the scene. Often these lines become pure symbols of force and tension. For Marin, nature was a precarious balance between warring parts, and the task of the artist was to bring these factors together in some kind of equilibrium without losing the life-enhancing quality imparted by these opposing forces." Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000.

Born in Bejing in 1921, Zao Wou-Ki studied at the School of Fine Arts in Hangchow where he later became a professor of drawing. In 1947, Zao moved to Paris where he was influenced by the modern language of Western abstraction. This transitional period in Zao's career, when he first departed from his own traditions and began to embrace Western abstraction, is the most provocative: in works from the late 1940s through early 1950s as we observe him wrestling with conflicting aesthetics and identities. His signature, for example, straddles the east and west. His first name is always signed in Chinese characters and the last name in Western orthograph.
In 1951 Zao traveled to Bern, Switzerland where he was first exposed to the paintings of Paul Klee (1879-1940), which proved to be highly influential. The present painting, consistent with his early work, is not entirely committed to abstraction, although it gestures in that direction, creating a dialogue between the traditional and the experimental. Thin black lines resolve out of what appears to be a continuum of fog, haze, and clouds - an atmosphere typical of traditional Chinese landscape painting. From these black markings, which were clearly influenced by Klee's draftsmanship, we see rising steps that parallel ancient Chinese architecture. The palette is almost monochromatic gray with only thin applications of blues, yellows and pinks. These subtle fields of color evoke atmospheric effects that are common in Klee's later works.
Zao would continue to develop more explosive styles of abstraction in the late 1950's. However, this period of his production, during his early thirties when he was attracting attention in American as well as Europe, is justly viewed as the highpoint in the artist's career. Estimate: $100,000 - $120,000.

Sculpted resin
27 x 21 x 8 inches (68.6 x 53.3 x 20.3 cm)
PROVENANCE:
Commissioned directly from the artist, 1987;
Crow Art Partnership Collection, Dallas.
Born in 1930 in France, Niki de Saint Phalle took up painting and sculpture in the 1950s as therapy for an emotionally tumultuous life. Her method of using guns fired at bags of paint to create splatter designs made her a celebrity artist of her time. Her Nana series of female sculptures in outrageously modern contortions and bright colors brought her wide acclaim. A Niki Museum devoted to her art is in Nasu, Japan. Niki also designed and created a fantasy garden in Tuscany, Italy with large colorful figures and shapes based on tarot cards. This sculpture is a model of Temperance, card number XIIII. The full size piece crowns the chapel of Temperance in the garden in Italy. This model was made for consideration of an additional full sized sculpture to adorn an office building in Dallas. The full size angel was not ordered. Niki said of this visualization of Temperance, card number XIIII, "I had great difficulty understanding this card, it was too far from my passionate nature. Temperance seemed to me to be a compromise. A middle road. One day the light dawned. Temperance is the RIGHT WAY. I made an angel of this card which crowns the chapel of Temperance." Niki continued to be a prolific artist of humorous and colorful works until her death in California in 2002.
A certificate of authenticity by the Niki Charitable Art Foundation will accompany this lot. Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.

Lot 33057 Signature Auction 5004
JIM DINE (American, b. 1935)Untitled (The Cheese Weeze), 1970-71
Mixed media and collage on artist's board
60 x 40 inches (152.4 x 101.6 cm)
Signed and dated verso: Jim Dine / 1970-1
PROVENANCE:
Sonnabend Gallery, New York, (label verso);
Acquired by the current owner from the above in 1972.
Diverse in subject and theme, Jim Dine's career has spanned nearly four decades during which he has experimented in various media including painting, sculpting, printmaking and photography. His combination of painted surfaces, written text and found objects challenges the division between High Art and real life. Dine moved to New York in 1958 at the birth of the Pop Art movement and "Happenings" in which Dine was an early participant together with Allan Kaprow (1927-2006), John Cage (1912-1992) and Claes Oldenburg (b. 1929).
Tools, robes, palettes, trees, gates and hearts have been recurring themes in Dine's work. The Heart made its first appearance in 1965 when he incorporated it into stage designs for a San Francisco production of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. As a motif in his art, Dine likes this universally recognized emblem of one's emotional core as a human being. He returns to it again and again, using it as a backdrop for what he describes as "symbolic self portraits." The Heart for Dine embodies a gamut of personal impressions, emotions, and memories.
This large-scale work incorporates areas of scattered paint, block-printed text, stenciled numbers, painted vegetables and cartoon-like animals. Dine then attached a cut-out watercolor depicting a red bleeding heart and a brush, a found object, to the center of the composition. This work was completed shortly after Dine returned from London and moved to a small farm in Putney, Vermont. Vermont has historically relied upon dairy farming for its agricultural income, hence the title, The Cheese Weeze. This assemblage of vegetables, animals, cheese, and Heart thus represents an autobiographical account of his experience in southern Vermont, when it was new and fresh and emotionally charged. Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.
Dine, Jim: American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, born 1935. Dine, a prolific artist, came to prominence in New York from 1959-1960 when he staged a series of "Happenings", creating action painting and assemblages. His works often repeat a visual theme (hearts) or frequently utilize objects (shoes, toothbrushes), throughout different mediums. Although he used objects from everyday life, he was not a Pop Artist, though he was not a pure abstractionist. By the 80s, he was considered a forerunner of the Neo-Expressionist movement.

Carlo Dolci and Workshop - The Martyrdom of Saint Andrew

CARLO DOLCI AND WORKSHOP (Italian, 1616-1687)The Martyrdom of Saint Andrew, circa 1646
Oil on canvas
47-3/4 x 38-1/2 inches (121.3 x 97.8 cm)
PROVENANCE:
Private collection, New York
Carlo Dolci painted different versions of this subject for distinguished Florentine patrons. The first and most intimate version of c. 1640 on panel was commissioned by Senator Paolo del Sera of Florence (52.5 x 41 cm., private collection New York; see Francesca Baldassari, Carlo Dolci, Catalogue Raisonné, Turin, 1995, no. 49). The next recorded version, dated 1643 and painted on canvas for an as yet unidentified collector, is now in the collection of the Birmingham City Art Gallery and Museum (inv. no. 45.62, 115.6 x 91.4 cm.), and is the most elaborate treatment of the subject (Baldassari, no. 50). It contains a self-portrait of the artist just below the right hand of the saint, quotations from the work of Titian and Rubens, and portraits of notable art world contemporaries such as that of Raffaello Ximines, a noted connoisseur and one of Dolci's earliest patrons who is shown in armor, and mustachioed, at the right. A third and largest recorded version also on canvas, painted in 1646 for Marchese Carlo Gerini, is now in the Palatine Gallery of the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv. no. 266; 122 x 99 cm.; Baldassari, no. 51). The present work is extremely close in size, composition, and handling to the Pitti version.

PROVENANCE:
Joseph Sartor Galleries, Dallas (label verso);
Private collection, Highland Park, Dallas.
One of California's most successful and prolific painters of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, William Keith found in Mt. Shasta a subject of enduring inspiration. He traveled to the area on numerous sketching trips, sometimes in the company of his great friend and fellow naturalist, John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club. Both men were natives of Scotland who met in the Yosemite Valley in 1872 and formed a lifelong bond. Both were committed to preserving California's natural beauty and wilderness areas and both found supreme artistic inspiration in those lands. Of Mt. Shasta, Keith wrote in his sketchbook in 1878, "clothed in white, mystic, wonderful." Keith painted Shasta from two primary vantage points, one close to the base of the mountain, and the other, such as this painting, from a greater distance that allowed the artist to present the full grandeur of the landscape. Keith wrote that he preferred the more distant vantage point because it presented a more encompassing view of the mountain. Keith began sketching and painting Mt. Shasta as early as 1868.
For much of his life, Keith lived in Berkeley and commuted to his studio in San Francisco. He marked many of his paintings with an S.F. below his signature to indicate the studio's location. In 1891 Keith shared his San Francisco studio with Tonalist George Inness, Sr. (1825-1894). At his death in 1911, Keith was said to have been the most financially successful artist in California.
Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000.

Signature Auction #5004
Jackies by Warhol go to Dallas for AuctionDALLAS -- As news photographs, the 1963 images of Jacqueline Kennedy as a grieving widow touched the nation, reflecting America's mourning after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
For pop artist Andy Warhol, the photos became the catalyst for his "Jackie" works, a series of paintings and screen prints created between 1963 and 1968 that captured the moments before and after the assassination as she was transformed from glamorous first lady to grieving widow.
