Stage 1: Meditation and the Alpha Level of Mind

What Is the Alpha Level of Mind?

Your brain functions on a small amount of electricity, much like a computer. This electrical current vibrates, pulses, at various speeds. When you are wide awake your brain vibrates 20 times per second - what scientists call the Beta frequency.

You are probably at this beta level of mind right now as you read this.

When you go to sleep, your brain frequency slows down, all the way to about half a cycle per second in the deepest levels of natural sleep. This is known as the Delta level.

In between Beta, the waking state, and Delta the deep sleep state, there are two other levels of mental activity.

When you are in a light level of sleep or in meditation you are in the Alpha range, which is 7 to 14 cycles per second. This is the center range and this is what we mean by saying "going to your center".

Going to the alpha level or centering is the same as meditating. When someone meditates, scientifically, they are simply reducing their brain wave frequency to alpha. The Alpha level is the level we use to activate our minds.

Jose Silva was born in August 11th, 1914, in Laredo Texas. When he was four, his father died. His mother soon remarried, and he, his older sister and younger brother moved in with their grandmother. Two years later he became the family breadwinner, selling newspapers, shining shoes, and doing odd jobs. In the evenings he watched his sister and brother do their homework, and they helped him learn to read and write. He has never gone to school, except to teach.

Jose's rise from poverty began one day when he was waiting for his turn in a barbershop. He reached for something to read. What he picked up was a lesson from a correspondence course on how to repair radios. Jose asked to borrow it, but the barber would only rent it, and that on condition that Jose complete the examinations in the back in the barber's name. Each week Jose paid a dollar, read the lesson, and completed an examination.

Soon a diploma hung in the barbershop, while across town Jose, at the age of fifteen, began to repair radios. That was the beginning of the career of the business man that not only shared his knowledge on the electronics program that he started in the Community College of his hometown; he also dramatically changed millions of lives in the world.

Here is a rare opportunity for a glimpse into the mind of a naturally developed clairvoyant, Jose Silva, who created a method so everyone could function in this manner. This gives us a very valuable clue as to how we, as Silva graduates, can function better in our day-to-day lives.
The following is an exact, unedited transcript of a conversation with Jose Silva, conducted during a conference in Mr. Silva's office in Laredo. Silva Newsletter editor Ed Bernd Jr. had been waiting for an opportunity when Mr. Silva was obviously functioning creatively and clairvoyantly, and was "tuning in" to get answers and information.
The physical signs included a sort of "far away" look, eyes turned upward and towards the left, and eyelids fluttering from time to time. The tone of voice was soft and thoughtful, the words flowing out smoothly and making a lot of sense. When all of these signs were noticed, the interviewer asked:

Q: Stop and think for just a moment if you would: Exactly what kind of mental process were you going through when you were giving me that answer?
Silva: Whenever I need to find the answer, I am accustomed to getting a feeling, to remember a feeling I get to enhance my ability to get information. I am familiar with this feeling because of practice and experience.
For instance, when I was working with Harry McKnight to develop a glossary of terms in the Graduate Seminar manual, I would get into a state of concentration and an idea would come, in many and different ways, many descriptions for one word, many kinds of meanings for the same situations. When I would come out, it would not always make the same kind of sense that it made within. So I always try to go with it as I sense it, and if it continues to make sense at the outer levels, then I'd go with it. (Note: Throughout this interview, he continued to show the same physiological signs of "tuning in" as the signs that prompted the question.)

Q: You said a "feeling." Is it like a physical feeling?
Silva: It is like an emotional feeling more than anything else. Kind of a mental thing. You can not explain it. It is not physical. It is a feeling you get through experience, of having come up with information successfully before, and you have detected that feeling when that took place.
I notice on this book that I'm writing now, that I get stuck sometimes and don't know where to go from that place. Then I concentrate and immediately the doors are opened and I start off writing again, with more information.
