About Me

On a cold day in April 1967, the world was blessed with an addition to its numbers. Well that's how I like to think of it anyway! I was born in Sheffield England to Thomas and Pamela Cook.

I do not really remember my early years, aside from a vague feeling of safety and happiness. My formative years really began at the age of three when we moved to Tonteg, a little village in Wales.

My years spent in Wales were the happiest of my life; my parents were caring and although money was short, we never knew it. With an older brother to tease me, my life was one of fun and sometimes frustration.

My Best Lenses

These are the five Lenses I consider to be my best! Disagree? Let me know in my Guestbook

The early years.

Sports

Sports are a major part of my life. I am a huge fan of Soccer, Rugby and Cricket - I have played all three, and been good at perhaps one of them! Now I am living in America I am beginning to appreciate different sports and it's interesting to see that despite the differences, there are a lot of common elements.

Rugby - I loved watching Rugby but unfortunately didn't have much talent playing!

I tried my hand at soccer but wasn't much better.

Cricket is perhaps the only sport I was good at - in School I was excellent - as beer and life took hold of me, I stopped practicing and slumped in the adult world of cricket - but I could have been good !

Interlude - an explantion of cricket.

For those who have never heard of cricket, here's a fun explanation.

The laws of cricket are very detailed and even many seasoned cricketers have trouble remembering them all - however there is a funny explanation of cricket that has been around for a while.

Cricket: As explained to someone who's never heard of it...

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

OK so that's confusing eh? Sad thing is that it actually is pretty accurate!

The Early Years continued

My Influences

There really are three or four things that have influenced me in early life, aside from my parents and brother.

Reading, Music and 'Science' have played a massive part in my life. I am a self professed Geek - and I am very logical and scientific. I have a talent for Mathematics and Computers and generally am good at most technical sciences. I am an amateur writer with a little talent, and a very amateur musician with no talent!

Music - from a very early I was always intrigued with music. Early on I loved classical music; as I progressed through life I moved on to Pop and then eventually settles with Rock Music. My favorite band is Rush and I have attended four concerts so far. I love all types of music and cannot imagine life without music

Reading - I have literally read thousands of books. I have always read since I was able to, but my 'reading career' started when I bought the book Lord of the Rings - it simply opened up a new world. I mostly read fantasy and science fiction but am branching out. Poetry has also influence me, and although I haven't read that much, I have attempted to write my own poetry.

The now

My current life and how I got here....

In the hazy summer of 1997 I found the internet. I was a lonely young man who had just moved into his first house at the age of 29. I started surfing and frequenting chat site - one in particular was fun - Cybersight. It doesn't exist anymore, but without this simple site my life would not have changed. I started to talk to a person called 'Artist' - we emailed for a while and began to phone each other. After a year of correspondance we met in real life. Eleven years later and we have just celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary - without this simple site I would not have the life I have now or the family I have. My family:

Wife: Leigh - light of my life; she inspires me, loves me for who I am and plays a major part in making me who I am today. Love is something I never felt I would find in this life, but I was wrong - I have found my soul mate.

Daughters - Kelly and Meghan - despite the fact that they are not my children by 'sperm donation' - they were five when I met them - the are MY CHILDREN. Meghan, the procrastinator, is full of life. She has the soul of a writer and the intelligence to match. Kelly, the warrior, has an artist's touch - she has a skill that far surpasses mine. They are fraternal twins - they are so different yet so similar.

Father: dad - what can I say - he is an inspiration and has always been there for me. We are thousands of miles apart now, and that is sad for me, but he visits and we are always in touch. Without him, I would also be nothing.

Mother - mom, mum - sadly no longer with us, my mother is the soft side of me. She gave me compassion and the ability to care - she is sadly missed, but always with me in my heart.

Brother - Gary (wife Sue, Kids: Maddy and James) - he is a rock in my life - unassuming, quiet and yet solid. He is a sportsman, and better than me, but we are very similar in many ways. I miss him and his family and this aspect of my life is the saddest - I only see my British family occasionally.

One of my poems...

I enjoyed writing this poem. It is based on the style haiku. I have tried to show how the seasons merge into one another.

Petulant Roses,
How do you greet summer?
As nature's barbed wire?
Or as a fragile paper-doll?
whose beauty surpasses all?,
and yet in a blink,
your angry bite is just a memory,
that fades with the opulent sun,
a sad prelude to the precipitous leaves,
whose hasty retreat from lusciousness,
is like a kaleidoscope of nature,
a rusty red sunset of the summer;
The end of beauty perhaps?,

or are you a chameleon of splendor?,
ever-changing,
dying on the prescient wind,
yet living in the eddies of life,
until bleakness engulfs the world,
as a white insanity of purity,
with intricate flakes of ice,
sliding daggers into the mind,
as winter's very own barbs,
show an intrinsic beauty,
magnificence personified,
that somehow betrays an innocence,
an obliqueness of the heart and soul,
so pure and yet somehow deceitful,
as a rebirth is hidden,
buried just an inch away,
waiting for the winter bluster,
to calm and fade,
like a babe's tears,
that dissipate with slumber,
as once again we see,
Petulant Roses.
.

My other poems

Lens 1 - The one that started it all.

I had been writing on several 'opinion' related sites over the years, and my reviews on this movie were the most well received. Then I stumbled across Squidoo and thought 'I could do this'.

So I edited my review and posted it on Squidoo - essentially I created a text Lens that simply was sub-par. After several months on Squidoo and learning what it really is all about, I revisited the Lens and added pictures and made the format a little better.

It's not perfect by any means, and one I will revisit - but it's a good Lens and will always be special to me as it was my first!

Lens 2 - and so the 'spam' begins.

So having just completed my first Lens, I went on a Lens writing Blitz. Although the content was good I really didn't put much thought into how the Lenses looked.

The second one I created was on a PC game called The Witcher. I am a passionate Role Playing fan and I really enjoyed this game and thought I should share my views with the world.

Looking back on this Lens and all my early Lenses, I really didn't know what I was doing - if you take a look at the URLs I used, they were not really relevant! This was a lesson I learned later.

Like many of my early Lenses, I have changed this a little - but it still requires some work to make it great!

**THIS LENS WAS UPDATED June 13, 2009**

I improved the overall layout buy adding CSS and HTML, and also added a lot more pictures. I added a few 'blackbox' modules and overall the Lens now is looking good!

They say 'You always remember your first' - it's true, My first Lens is special to me!

Lens 3 - ooh what's a poll module do?

I am a huge Rush fan and I've always been mystified why they are always overlooked for induction into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Doing a little research I found many bands who aren't in there and decided to see who everyone thought should be inducted.

My intention was to provide a Bio on every band included, but this somehow got sidetracked! Another Lens which I will revisit one day!

Lens 4 - still not really thinking about what Lenses to create.

My early Lenses were all designed on a whim; in this case I'd seen the movie and felt it deserved its own Lens.

This one really lacks any decent design - the content is good, but there are no pictures and no breaks in the text.

Wow - another one to revisit - I have a lot of work to do if I want to become a Giant Squid on June 30, 2009!

I am a geek and I'm proud of it! I've been playing Role Playing Games for 30 years and I guess I will still be playing them 30 years down the road.

Lens 5 - still not learning am I!

Still suffering from the same problems, this Lens is another text only Lens. One more added to the 're-do' list. Again no real thought put into what the Lens should be about. This was my biggest problem as an early Lensmaster, I was more interested in publishing a Lens, rather than perfecting a Lens.

Lens 6 - I'm getting there.

I really don't remember how bad this one was when I first designed it, but having updated it several times based on feedback on Squidu and Squidoo I finally feel that some of my early Lenses are showing promise.

I have a lot of content in this one, and personalized reviews on all Pink Floyd's album. The only thing it perhaps lacks is an update. So far that is my biggest failing with all of my Lenses.

Keep your Lenses fresh; the more you update the Lens, the more return visits you'll get.

Lens 7 - getting better

After the initial 'buzz' of joining a new site and publishing a few Lenses I began to think about what I would actually want to see were I to view a Lens. I tried to make this Lens more readable and present it in a far more logical way.

I didn't do too bad a job with this one; there are a few sections with too much text and the Lens is a little bland (I hadn't started messing with HTML and CSS yet), so although I will go back and change this one day, it's not bad as it stands!

Lens 8 - a backward step.

Whammo! Again I began to think of Squidoo as a Blog rather than a 'showcase' site. I attended a great concert and wrote about the concert.

Sure, the content is very good - but no one is going to read it - it's chockablock full of text and has no pictures at all! Everything had gone down the toilet due to my enthusiasm.

This will be re-done!

Lens 9 - Work In Progress

One of the problems I am finding with Squidoo is that as I try and get to Giant status I am leaving a whole host of semi-complete Lenses. Yet again I have some good content here, but there are no pictures.

One thing I realized early on is that content is very important, but if you don't present the content well then the Lens will fail. I started formatting this, added a picture or two and then essentially neglected it.

Yet another that needs editing!

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

Lens 10 - a one star Lens.

I've been an amateur writer for years and decided to post one of my part finished novels on Squidoo. After a while I realized that posting a novel on Squidoo isn't bad, it just isn't what Squidoo is all about.

I thought about re-formatting, adding some pictures etc, but eventually I came up with an idea when I created a Lens demonstrating how to rate other Lenses.

This Lens became my example of a 'one star' Lens - and as such will remain unchanged!

Lens 11 - a two star Lens.

This started out as a very simple lens asking who would win the Election of 2008. After the election was over and President Obama came to power, I changed it to become a 'How is President Obama doing' Lens.

While the idea was good, and I actually got a fair amount of votes in the poll, the Lens really lacks quite a lot. This became my 'Two Star' Lens that is featured in my Lens on how to rate on Squidoo.

"To be or not to be.....that is totally illogical captain!" Spock

Lens 12 - getting there (again!)

I tried to jump on the band wagon with this Lens. I had purchased a Wii and had seen a lot of press coverage about it; it seemed the perfect subject for a Lens.

Having not thought about HTML or CSS yet, this became an average Lens that has a great amount of content, is formatted logically but doesn't really stand out.

With the 'hype' of Wii Fit over now, it's probably not worth updating the format.

Lens 13 - still bland!

One of the things I love about the web is that anyone can be a budding writer. I've placed my own poetry on many websites and generally received some good feedback.

I decided to showcase my poetry on Squidoo. The Lens again isn't bad - I have started using some HTML on this but the Lens is still bland.

If you can combine decent content, a nice format and clever product placement, then you're on to winner!

Lens 14 - slipping back again!

This was a Lens that was produced to try and get some feedback and maybe create a good debate. It has a little blurb about the subject and two polls. It did get some responses but this really is a poor Lens.

I didn't really present any arguments and didn't use the Squidoo modules that are available - this would have been an ideal Lens for a Duel module.

Lens 15 - more of the same.

At this point in my Squidoo career I am still discovering some of the wonderful modules. The Poll module intrigued me and I began to think of ways of using the polls to create some debates.

The inspiration for this Lens was a news article in which they stated that the number of millionaires was declining due to the recession - it made me think on how society seemed more interested in riches rather than other more pressing issues such as poverty, hunger or global warming.

While this is not my best lens, it is interesting and has some potential.

If you don't think you're good enough to be a Giant Squid - think again - everyone has the potential - work hard, listen to advice and you'll amaze yourself.

Lens 16 - getting there.

As many people already know, I am a huge Rush fan. While Rush are not everyone's kind of music, they have been around for over thirty years and have influenced a lot of modern day rock - these are the elements required to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it therefore mystifies me as to why they are not inducted yet.

The idea of this Lens is simple - create a 'fans' rock and roll hall of fame. Essentially allow people to vote on who they want in the Hall of Fame. It's a great idea, but without decent traffic and reader participation it is doomed to fail.

The Lens is deliberately bare as it is intended to grow as bands are inducted - one day I may come back and promote this Lens more vigorously!

Lens 17 - pretty good!

I am a budding poet and have published a lot of my poetry on several sites on the web. The best one I have found so far is Papertank. While it is going through a very quiet period at the moment, I find that the critiques I get from fellow writers, and the friendly community I have encountered make it easy to love this site for writers.

The idea of this Lens is to promote some of the poetry published on Papertank - the poems that are on the Lens have all been voted as 'excellent' by their peers on the site. There's some really good poetry on this Lens.

It's a shame that Papertank seems to have lost a lot of traffic as this could have been a great 'side' site to compliment the main papertank.com site.

Squidu.com is one of the best resources for new and experienced Lensmasters.

Lens 18 - kinda OK.

One thing I am hoping that Squidoo will do eventually is to have the ability to have 'multiple' pages on a Lens. As such, I had to create an entirely new Lens as an 'archive' to my main Papertank Lens.

This Lens isn't bad, it's just not intended to be a standalone Lens.

Lens 19 - still kinda OK!

This is another 'off-shoot' Lens to my main Papertank poetry Lens. The idea was to create a Bio Lens for each of the featured poets on the main Lens - this one is about a superb poet - hang on - it's about me!

I like the idea of this Lens, and should papertank become popular again, I will revisit this idea and create a lot more 'bio' lenses.

Thanks goes out to all the Angels out there! They make Squidoo a better place.

Lens 20 - personal Lens - not bad.

This is a very personal Lens, and one that is ongoing in a way. It's about my goal of reducing my weight to a decent level. While it's not a great Lens, it does have some insight into my life and my personal 'problems'.

Lens 21 - good idea - not enough content.

There are a lot of really good Lenses dedicated to improving other Lenses (using HTML, CSS etc). This one took a neat idea and expanded on it a little. It's a useful way to add a simple calendar using some HTML and some hyperlinks.

It has two different methods - one a simple 'HTML' calendar with internal links, the other a 'hosted' calendar.

Not a bad Lens - but could have more in it!

Stuck for a subject to write about? Me too! So how do I find new subjects? I just let my thoughts drift and see what they come up with!

Lens 22 - very personal for me.

This is a very personal Lens for me, and while it perhaps isn't anywhere near my best, it is from the heart. It has some information on my family, and all proceeds go directly to charity.

It will be updated soon with some pictures from the Relay for Life event, and will be updated as the year goes by in preparation for next years event.

Lens 23 - another good idea

Well I was on a roll with 'help' Lenses and this seemed a good idea at the time. It simply doesn't have enough on it to make a great Lens, but is useful for some - I do note that the method doesn't work on Firefox, but this was an early Lens for me and I was still learning!

Take critisism as it's intended - not to tell you you're crap - but to help you learn and improve. We all have room for improvement.

Lens 24 - pretty cool!

This is one of my better Lenses! I was on a roll finding 'widgets' that could be incorporated into any Lenses and found some really fun and useful gadgets.
The design of the site is good, and uses some HTML and CSS to highlight code etc.

It's updated often (although I haven't added much for a while) and although I haven't used many of the items myself, I may come back and use them in future Lenses.

Lens 25 - playing with duels.

The duel is one of my favorite modules and I decided to come back to it with this Lens. I always find it hard balancing content on a Lens like this. I didn't want to add too much, as the duel would then be somewhat hidden, but I wanted to add some content to help users decide.

I don't think there's quite enough content on this one, but it's come out OK!

What does it mean to me to become a Giant Squid? It means that I am in the company of some amazing writers, and I am very humble.

Lens 26 - Back on Track.

This is one of the first 'decent' Lenses I produced. The content is excellent, but there is still a lot I could do on the formatting. I began to use the modules well in this Lens, and while I can add more formatting and pictures I am pleased with the end product.

Lens 27 - my best so far.

For once I came up with a 'hot' topic for a duel. This time I did a lot of research and presented facts and fictions about Global Warming. I tried to present arguments on both sides of the case and this became one of my most visited Lenses, and was a 'top 5' duel for a week.

I plan to revisit it and re-organize at some point, but overall I am very proud of the debate this created and think the design incorporated some good formatting and some great content.

Life REALLY is like a box of chocolates!

Lens 28 - umm that's this one!

Not much to say about this really - I saw a lot of people advertising their own 'Lensographies' on Squidu and thought 'that sounds fun' - so I produced this!

The initial design was not good - it was simply a list of lenses by category - however, I decided to revamp the whole thing and make it far more personal!

Lens 29 - starting to get the hang of this now

This is a subject that I am passionate about. Apple have monopolized the digital music market and essentially helped 'hide' a great service. What I tried to do with this Lens was get some information out about the different music services available and let the reader decide which was best for them.

Overall I like the design and feel of the Lens, and feel the content is really good.

There's a time in your life when you grow up and take on adult responsibilities - when that time comes for me, I'll write a Lens about it!

And there's more.

At this point I decided to try and achieve Giant Squid status. Therefore I created Lensography part 2, or 'My Quest to become a Giant Squid'.

If you made it this far down the Lens, then WOOHOO! Well done!

Some family photos

Whadya think? Like the Lens? Think I'm cool? Let me know!
