Easy Songs to Play on Guitar | Billboard Songs With Easy Guitar Chords
Are you learning to play guitar? Would you like some beginner guitar songs that only have a few chords and are easy to play? Not those old folk songs that you find in so many learn to play guitar books, Peg 'O My Heart, This Land is Your Land etc. Not that anything is wrong with those guitar songs, but you started playing guitar to play songs you know, songs you hear on the radio, songs you can download, songs everybody is listening to and wants to hear. That's the whole reason you wanted to learn guitar.Am I right?
There are lots of easy to learn guitar songs out there that use only a few, simple, beginner chords, yet they still sound good. Some of them you can play just as written, some of them you can easily modify. I'll give you some tips on how you can change a song you like so that it's easier to play, yet still sounds good.

I won't be posting the lead sheets here (chords and lyrics), lately the record companies have been aggressive about copyright violation. There are chord and lyric sites that have revenue sharing deals with the record companies, I will post links to the songs and provide any chord progressions as needed.

Learn to Play Viva La Vida by Coldplay
From the 4th studio album by London band Coldply, Viva La Vida was the bands first Billboard Hot 100 hit. The songs Spanish title is taken from a painting by artist Frida Kahlo. The 4 chords repeat over and over making it a pretty easy song to play on guitar.

Jason Mraz Chords - I'm Yours
This is a great easy version of this Grammy nominated song of the year. I'm Yours such a catchy tune, it's no wonder it's all over the radio. Coming from the RIAA certified Gold Album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things this is a great song to learn on guitar if you only know a few basic chords.
Jason actually plays this using barre chords, I've seen a video where he does it in the key of A, but the album version is in the key of B. Once you learn the full barre chords you can easily play it in any key. But since this is the easy guitar version we won't use barre chords

The chords in this video are not the same as the easy ones. This guitarist is using a lot of different chord shapes to play this. Not an easy guitar song, but pretty cool nonetheless.

Rare Early Performance of I'm Yours by Jason Mraz
You can see that Jason is doing the song using barre chords. Not exactly a beginner guitar song if you play it like this! Using a capo on the 4th fret is a good approximation of the official version of the song. If you look closely though you can see that he's starting with a full barre chord on the 5th fret which would make this in the key of A, not the key of B like the CD

Turn Any Song Into an Easy Song to Play on Guitar
Is the song you want too play to difficult?
Sometimes I have to modify songs to make the easier to play for my students. There are a few different ways you can do this. Here are some of the ways to turn a song into a beginner guitar song.- change the key
- leave out some difficult chords
- simplify some of the difficult chords
Changing the key means taking all the chords an moving them up or down. Unfortunately, If you change the key you won't be able to play along with the recording. Still, it can make an unplayable song playable. Another reason to change keys is to make it easier to sing
Sometimes you can just leave a chord out and keep playing the same chord. This works especially well if the chord passes by quickly.
Simplifying the difficult chords can be easy to do. Here's an example if the chord is a C9 chord, you can just play a C chord and it will fit. One of the few times this won't always work is with a sus4 or sus2 chord. For example a Csus4
How to Simplify Guitar Chords
If you don't know a chord like G9 or G7 or Em7, you can just play the chord without its number. For example G9 or G7 becomes G, Em7 becomes Em.
This won't work with sus4 or sus2 chords!

Simple Guitar Song: Ob La Di Ob La Da - The Easy Guitar Version
Coming from the White Album by the Beatles, Ob La Di is an easy song to play on guitar, if you use a capo and leave out a few chords. You can leave out the Bm and Em in the chorus and it will still sound just fine. If you don't know how to play the D7 then you can just play a D chord.
