First: What is a Sit-n-Go?
Dont panic if you dont know
A Sit-n-Go is an unscheduled poker tournament that can either be single table or multi-table. They start when the table(s) fill up. Buy-ins can range from $1.00+.10 to $200+15.
Single table Sit-n-Go's (9 players) the payout is as follows:
1st place: 50% of total prize pool
2nd place: 30% of total prize pool
3rd place: 20% of total prize pool
An example payout for a $50+$5 Sit-n-Go would be:
Total prize pool: $450
1st: $225
2nd: $135
3rd: $90
The payout stays the same for every $50+$5 Sit-n-Go tournament you will play. This is helpful to know, you can always figure out what 1st place will win depending on what the buy in is.
If you dont know what $50+$5 means, here it is.
The $50 is for the buy in to the tournament, and the $5 is for the poker room or site that you are playing in. This is because there is no rake (where the site takes a very small % of the pot) in a Sit-n-Go like there is in a normal cash game. So when you buy into or play a $50+$5 Sit-n-Go your really spending $55. Something to take into account.

3 Reasons to Play Sit-n-Go Tournaments

1. SNG's are more structured than cash games, usually last about an hour, and have a set number of players. Cash games can be long, and interupted by new players coming and leaving. Blinds also dont increase in cash games thus the players dont feel forced to play only ok hands. A player may want to wait till they have AA, and since the blinds are always the same they can do such a thing.
2. Ups and downs are lower in SNG's than in cash games. This means less winning huge hands only to be followed by losing the next one. Also you have a set amount of money that you may lose (yes you may not win all). You might buy into a SNG for $50+$5, when doing so you know you have the possibility of losing that $55. When playing a cash game, however you can lose that amount in just a few hands.
3. SNG's have a strategy to them, unlike cash games. It's more of a sport. Being able to beat out 8 other players is a good feeling.
