Is a Midlife Career Change Right for You?

So you're not happy with your current occupation and are considering a career change. If you're wondering whether your decision is the right one, just let me help you analyze your current job situation.

A stressful job situation comes from obvious and not so obvious causes. An example of obvious cause is if your dissatisfaction comes from the fact that your job is not challenging anymore. A not so obvious cause is if you are unmotivated because you don't like a certain aspect of your job, which no longer fulfill your growing needs and wants.

For the first case, a career change is not necessary. You just need to discuss your job situation with your boss or other managers who are responsible for solving employees' issues. But if your career requires you to meet with lots of people while you're more inclined to work in a small team, or even to do the job yourself, then that is not aligned to your natural tendency.

Here I'm simplifying the job situation but the idea is if you no longer like "the content," what you do to accomplish the job, as well as "the context," the environment of the job, it's a sign that you need a career change.

The Best Career Change Idea

There are many avenues to pursue your dream career. You may want to take a night class for a degree that is suitable to the new career. Or, you may work part-time during weekends as a trainee. But I'd rather suggest you "make an online presence" as a career change preparation.

What is great about the idea? As you may already know, without the right guidance, changing career is tough, stressful and extremely risky. If you feel that "you're already a success," you'll encounter a higher self resistance both from yourself and from your family. So, how to make the career move as effortless as possible?

First, keep your current job. If you don't like it, you can pretend that you love what you do. At least, find a positive aspect of your current job to keep your motivation until you can get about the same income from your new career. So, don't quit your job because you need the salary to support your family.

Next, find a tool to help you make an online presence. What you're looking for is a way to shorten the learning curve so that you can start earning money while learning. The tool that I recommend is SitebuildIt. In a simplest term, it's a web site building tool. But depending on your career objective it can serve your other goals.

If you want to write an outstanding career change resume you need to offer something special to prospective employers. For example, you're a teacher who aspires to change to a sales career; you can learn copywriting and build a simple web site about a topic related your targeted sales career. Later, your ability to sell products or services from your site could help you create a winning resume.

The beauty of this idea is if, in the future, you change your mind and you want to build your own business instead, you have already built a strong business foundation. At first, your site(s) may only add an extra income in addition to your monthly salary, but when they're growing they will become a serious business that eventually surpass your job's salary. So you'll always win at the end.

I have personally used SitebuildIt for more than 4 years and it helped me made a career switch. When I built my first site I had no technical web building knowledge, so I could focus on the content of my site. And I've enjoyed working from home with the help of "Site Build It" for the last one year -- since I said good bye to my employer. So, if I can, you can too...
