Welcome to Skippyjon Jones Lesson Ideas!

If you are looking for ideas for your lesson or unit study, let me be your springboard. In this lens you will find lists of various activities and websites that you can use to customize your very own Skippyjon Jones lesson plans.

Beginning Your Skippyjon Unit Study

First, I would like to suggest that you buy or check out at least three of the five Skippyjon Jones books listed below and familiarize yourself with the stories and colorful wording. I also highly recommend that like Skippyjon you use your muy best Spanish accent when reading the books with your class. All but the first story come with a CD of author Judy Schachner reading the stories. This can be helpful for pronunciation of Spanish words as you prepare for your lesson.

After you have familiarized yourself with the books, you will want to visit http://www.SkippyjonJones.com">Skippyjon Jones to view the unit study suggestions offered by author Judy Schachner. They are a great way to get started.

Lesson ideas and activites!

Don't miss more ideas listed below!

I have literally looked high and low on multiple web searches to try and find ideas for a Skippyjon Jones unit study to do with my kids. After little success with this search, I decided to generate my own list of ideas and to create this lens. It's my hope to help others of you who may be searching as well!

Skippyjon Jones Lesson Ideas for your Unit Study

Math ideas:

Use dried pinto beans or jelly beans as counters for math class.
Use a jar full of beans to practice estimation skills.

Science ideas:

Research Siamese cats and Chihuahuas. Make a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the two animals as you discuss why Skippyjon thought he was a dog. Also, you may want to research other animals whose ears seem too big for their bodies (hares, elephants, serval, bats, etc...)

Cooking ideas:

Make refried beans with your class, or invite someone in to teach you how they are made. You could also bring in cans of pinto beans. While the students are mashing them, discuss Skippyjon Jones first adventure rescuing the beans from Alfredo Buzzito the Bumblebeeto Bandito!

Language and Writing Ideas

Take time to study the author, Judy Schachner. A video about her can be found at the link below. Have your students write letters to Judy to with questions, suggestions or thanks for her series. After viewing the author, have the students become the author by writing and illustrating a new Skippyjon adventure.

For fun you could take time to list all of Skippy's many nicknames from throughout the series from Pinky Paws to Mr. Fluffernutter! Ask kids to share their own nicknames if they wish.

Another great idea is to have you students do the Readers Theater play for Skippyjon Jones Lost in Spice. This can be found on the Skippyjon Jones .com website.

Culture Ideas

Research Mexican heritage and culture. Discuss this with the children along with the various Spanish words found throughout the five book Skippyjon Jones series. Take time to teach the students some Spanish words. Bring in books about Mexico to share with your students. Have them write a report on the culture or use discussion time to generate a list of related topics. See the links below for related items that may enhance your study.

Music ideas for your unit study!

Many of the chants in the Skippyjon Jones books are sung to the tune the Mexican Hat Dance. Follow the You Tube link below to show your kids the Mexican Hat dance. You may also want to check out a CD with traditional Mexican songs for the class to listen to while you make your shakers. Afterwards, you can play the songs and use your shakers to dance to the rhythm of the music.

Craft and Art Ideas

Skippyjon is an artist. He draws on his walls!!

Instead of drawing on your classroom or homeschool room walls, print out some coloring pages from the Skippyjon website for your kids to color. Or better yet, have your students illustrate their own picture of Skippyjon. You may also want to use dried pinto beans to make a musical shaker out of two paper plates or two disposable plastic cups. (Attach to one another and decorate).

Make a Lapbook!

A great keepsake from your Skippyjon Jones study!

To culminate your Skippyjon unit study, make a lapbook all about Skippyjon and his amigos. It can be filled with drawings, a Spanish word list, a biography of Judy Shachner or whatever relevant details you may want to include. Don't know what a lapbook is or how to make one, click the link below for more information.

This is fantastic :) Where did you find the pictures for the lapbook? I would love to have my students create one, however I cannot find the black and white illustrations that you have colored. Thank you!

Well-done lens! I really enjoyed it. As a fellow Skippyjon Jones fan, Mom and former teacher, I have to say these are some great ideas for learning moments with these great books. They are recommended reading. Very fun! Kudos for a great lens!

Love it! I'm trying to find all the board books, as the regular ones are a little too old for my 2-year-old (it's hard to teach vocabulary when half the words are made up! And it's hard to explain that he's a cat, but wants to be, or thinks he is a chihuahua!) But the board books are just perfect! The only one my library has is the shapes one (which is why it has the library stickers all over it on my MTM post, which you are welcome to 'feature' by the way. http://bitingmyhand.blogspot.com/2010/09/muffin-tin-monday-shape-up.html) and my daughter has it all but memorized! She loves to zoom around and tell us that she's orbiting us!
