Octaves Are Your Key To Playing Fast And Furious - Slap Bass Lessons

Remember you can never go wrong playing in octaves...

The first thing you need to remember while learning how to slap bass, even if you have been playing for a while, is that you can always play in octaves.

For example anytime you hit a note on the E string you can immediately pop the same note on the D string. By doing this you will never be at a loss for what you need to do next, at times it will be automatic. So remember, when in doubt octaves, octaves, octaves.

Next we will touch on how you must use your thumb to perfect your funky attack.

The Funk Comes From Your Thumb - Slap Bass Lessons

Releasing your thumb as quick as possible after your attack...

The next thing you should always remember while learning how to slap bass like a pro is the release of your thumb.

Have you ever noticed how many of the great funky bass players are doing all the movement with their thumb? What they are doing is hitting the string with their thumb and immediately releasing it hitting the string. If you don't release your thumb after hitting the string you will get a dead "thud" sound and not the "thump" sound that you desire. So remember hit and then release hit and then release.

Practicing Is The Key To Playing Without Hesitation - Slap Bass Lessons

Practicing is the key to playing without thinking...

You have heard it before repetition is the mother of skill. So while taking slap bass lessons you will need to always have a metronome no matter what your playing level.

What a metronome will do is allow you to chart your progress. No matter what lesson you are learning for the day, you need to set the metronome at a slow level and practice your riff. Then speed it up a notch or two. Remember to chart your progress for each riff. Next time you practice that riff you will know the speed you need to beat.
