Let's face it without the strings there wouldn't be any sound on the bass and this couldn't be any truer than in the slap style technique.

By manipulation the way the strings are played is were you get your sound. In fact the unique slap sound actually comes from the joint in the middle of the thumb striking the bass so hard that the string will vibrate against the frets and thus creating a buzzing sound.

This buzzing sound is typically avoided when you normally play with your fingers but for the slap technique it is most favored!

Snap Crackle and Pop - Slap Bass Technique 

GIve the strings the finger to get that pop sound...

Now that you have an idea of how the strings need to ring to really bring forth the thump sound next we need to concentrate on popping the strings. For this technique, grab underneath the string with either your index or middle finger and pull up away from the bass and then let go.

You should hear the pop sound upon release of the string and should want to prominent "pop" it loud enough to make sure the sting buzzes against the frets. Remember buzzing against the frets with this technique is actually a good thing!

Use your forearm to drive the speed...

To play fast and furious with the slap bass technique you are going to have to provide more body movement than you normally would playing with just your fingers.

By rotating your forearm, almost like turn a door knob, you will be able to slap and pop strings at the same time. It is almost like playing two notes in one!

Ghost Notes To Improve Your Funk | Slap Bass Technique 

Use ghost notes to provide a different sound...

To vary up your slap bass techniques try using a couple of ghost notes. You have probably seen and heard ghost notes used; the ghost notes produce a percussive "thud" type sound.

To get that sound simply strike the string with your thumb while dampening that same string with your other hand. Keep practicing until you get that "thud" type funk sound.
