Child abuse and sexual abuse are far more prevalent than people realize.

True Stories.. G-rated, but informative.
My story... Even my Mother never knew.
As a child, I was sexually abused. It started at such an early age, I didn't even know what sex was.. or maybe even the difference between boys and girls.
My abuser was my father. He told me we were going to share something special, and it was a secret between just me and him. I was not to tell my Mother. I loved my father, then, and did as I was asked.
I hated it, even tho at first I'd been happy that it made daddy happy. By the time I figured out it was wrong, I also had become afraid that if my Mother found out, my parents would be split up, it would be my fault, and I might get left with daddy. I must have done something to make my daddy do this anyway.. so it would be all my fault.
One day, I was playing with my dolls while my mother was watching some 'For Women' movie, where a Psychiatrist is talking to a mother about how to recognize abuse in a child. He showed her crayon drawings... and explained that children would express their emotions through the pictures they drew. Drawings of children with tears in their eyes, or no color, or drawn apart from family indicated trouble. The next day, the school teacher asked the class to draw our families. I wanted to draw my father waaay away from me, and no colors. Remembering that movie, and fearing discovery, I drew a happy crayon family, all together. Yes, children are good at keeping secrets if they matter.
I eventually put a stop to my abuse... In late Jr High School. I stopped it by wearing tight jeans with a 'fashionable' chain belt through the loops at all times... and locking it with a luggage lock.
My father didn't believe no meant no... but he couldn't cut the chain on my favorite belt... My Mother would notice that. He checked me for that belt almost daily for a year, however.
I've never reported him to the police. I DID tell my Mother what happened in 1997, and made the mistake of telling her I'd let her decide when I told anyone else.
It was difficult to get her to believe. She thought I was lying to her, but I proved it with a yellowed scrap of paper with a sad poem on it hidden under the liner of my jewelry box.
She believes now, but still doesn't want me to tell. I so regret that promise, and I'm now somewhat breaking it.
The Moral : TALK to your kids. No matter how much you trust your friends, neighbors, and spouse, explain to the kids secrets should NEVER be kept from you. If they are asked to keep a secret, they should let YOU decide if it's a good secret or bad.

Please research current status before donating to their cause.
Due to the fact that abused children grow up with a variety of issues, Suicide prevention is very much a related cause... and one of the best suicide prevention organizations is in trouble.
As of 9-22-06 they still need about 40,000 to pay off their outstanding phone bill. Can you help?

Child Abuse Poll.
Sexually, physically, or even verbally... Abuse is abuse. Child Abuse is quite common, but people will not go out publically and SAY they've been abused. Here's a chance to say it anonymously.
For this poll, consider a child anyone under the age of 18, by anyone old enough to know better.

- Thanks everybody for the feedback up to now...
Just a couple reminders I forgot to give back in July 07...
1- If anyone wants me to contact them, remember, if your comment doesn't link to your identity, I can't necessarily find you to contact you. Email me at the email address I gave above.
2- If you are considering making your OWN email address public... I truly recommend you at least disguise your email address the way *I* did... Spammers have automated programs that find email addresses written on the internet.. even when they are not linked.

Child Abuse Awareness Songs from Amazon.
Hear them in my Video Module.
Martina McBride - Greatest Hits: This Album is worth the purchase price for even the one song, 'Concrete Angel'... a song that makes me cry every time I hear it. But add in 'Broken Wing', and 'Independence Day', and you've got a bargain to beat all bargains!
Horse of a Different Color- Big & Rich: I just found 'Holy Water', I never heard of this band or album before. I'm getting it. Enough said? :)
Gone from Danger- Joan Baez: 'A Crack in the Mirror'. A story of a young girl who was sexually abused, and no one beleived her. Kinda rings a chord for me. Also, Joan Baez just has a beautiful voice, and a great musical style. This is not available in my video module, listen to a sample on Amazon instead. If you find or create a video with it, let me know!
October Project- Bury My Lovely : This song is not obviously awareness of any sort, but it does make you feel. The song has a haunting quality about it that's actually very pleasant. -- Update.. Evidentally this video was removed from Itube... Too bad, it was quite lovely, and listening to it made me want to buy this bands CDs... Why don't little known has-been bands realize that leaving such things available are GOOD ADVERTISEMENT? -- I added another video using the song, but its nothing compared to the original OP video.
Pump- Aerosmith: We have to end our list with a 'girl gets revenge on daddy' song, right? 'Janie's Got a Gun.'

More of my past... About Spankings.
This needs added to my website, but i'll just put here for now.
I remember when I was a kid, for serious offenses, it was daddys job to do the disciplining... Mamma would tell him whatever we'd done that she felt needed correction.
He'd take us out back, cut a green switch from the tree.. (not sure what type, but long flexible branches) We had to drop our pants, and we'd get switched to the bare legs.... It hurt horribly.
If we squirmed, he'd get mad and it would get worse.
We'd always have painful welts afterward, and quite often bleeding ones.
The teachers never seemed to care why we could barely stand to sit down in class... @$#%...
I hope they do better than that nowadays...
I also remember, that although the whips were painful, when something we did wrong (or was assumed to have done wrong) wasn't severe enough to call for daddy, Mom would just give us these disappointed looks... I can't really describe it.
Those looks hurt me almost as bad as the whippings.... The whippings were totally unnecessary... For ME. (My brother needed more)
This is not to say I am completely against spankings... I think there are times when they are needed. But it should be bare hand to bottom. If your hand stings even a bit, YOU'RE HITTING TOO HARD. And spankings should be the exception. Not the rule.
(An example of where I have spanked a child... Years ago, I was babysitting a cousin for the first time. I was a teen. not sure of his age.. a very rebellious 6? He was being very very difficult, and finally screamed at me when I'd tell him to stop what he was doing that I wasn't his mommy, and he didn't have to listen to me because I couldn't do nothing to him. - Insert spanking. [not beating... probably only hurt his pride] - The child was a perfect angel until mommy got back at which time he ran crying floods to her as if he were dying "mommy mommy she spanked me!" her answer; "You must have deserved it then." - insert crushed look here - I never had a problem with him again. I stepped aside later to explain to his mom why I'd spanked him, because I actually was a bit ashamed of myself... I couldn't decide if he'd deserved it or not. She told me it was completely ok and she was glad I'd done it. -- My own daughter is too young to need or understand any discipline other than NO and push her hand away from whatever... But if she ever does later what my cousin did to me when babysat... I'd want the babysitter to do the same. Just don't abuse it!)
About spankings 2
Part of this is duplicated.. but this is more in depth.
Discipline was very harsh in my house. My parents had a tendency to let their anger do the talking when it came to discipline.
Sometimes, discipline would be as minor as being sent to our rooms.
Sometimes it was getting whipped repeatedly on the bare legs with green whips off the trees, usually until the welts bled.
My brother and I had 2 very different personalities.
When I was sent to my room, I took it as a punishment. -I punished MYSELF by not allowing myself to play with my toys while I was in there, because if I played and had fun, it was not a punishment.
-My brother when sent to his room, played and had a blast, and it was no punishment at all. when let out, he continued his behaviors. He was a hooligan. (luckily, he wizened up a bit as he grew... and I would now recommend him as a potential spouse for the right woman.)
I rarely did things wrong.. mostly I was punished for things my brother did that they thought I did, or they thought I was lying, when my brother was.
Neither my brother nor I deserved the spankings with a switch that we were given. NO child does.
Even so.. I am a FIRM believer that a swat with the hand, applied only as really needed, can work wonders.
I am not talking of ABUSE.
I am talking about a swat that hurts more mentally than physically. maybe barely even stings a little physically. DEFINATELY doesn't cause actual injury.
This swat should be applied with children who do not understand any other type of punishment, as a last resort. For instance, an older sibling persisitently hits his younger sibling, even after punishments like 'time out', and a 'talking to'. A spanking here isn't child abuse, it's child PROTECTION!
It should also be applied rarely, as a 'this is a VERY serious infraction' discipline for 'hard to dispipline' AND other children.
Discipline should also always be given in context.
the child should KNOW what they are being spanked, swatted, or just sent to their room for.
Again.
Child abuse is COMPLETELY and THOUROUGHLY repugnant, and should NEVER be done.
Carefully applied spankings are NOT ABUSE.
(Whippings are. Many of what parents CALL spankings are... the 'spankings' that cause bodily injury. that's not 'spankings' That's BEATINGS.)
A stitch in time saves nine?
no..
A SWAT in time saves KIDS!.
