Natural History Museum

This lens is about the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and my favorite exhibits there. Out of all the Museums in Washington DC this one is by far my favorite. I've been there to many times to count and will go again and again. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Be sure to stop by often as I will be rotating some of my favorites.

Giant Squid

Right now there is an exhibit about the Giant Squid. I thought this was kind of ironic since we are all here on Squidoo. How would you like to meet this kind of Giant Squid!?

The giant squid is among the largest invertebrates on Earth-with lengths measuring nearly 60 feet (18 m)! They are one of the largest predators that live in the deep sea.

Hope Diamond

I first saw the Hope Diamond when I was about 7 years old in the first grade. I remember going on a field trip to the museum and looking forward to seeing the dinosaurs and mummies. I remember being told that we were going to see the Hope diamond and not really understanding the big deal. All I knew was that it was worth lots of money and it had a curse that was so bad that no one wanted it so it was donated to the museum. Wow! That must have been some curse.

According to the legend. The diamond was stolen from an idol in India and a curse was placed on the stone. Anyone who owns or even touches the stone will die.

This diamond is a perfect large blue diamond. It weighs 45.52 carrots. To learn more about the hope diamond click here.

Yes. I believe that it could be cursed.

SusanRusso says:

I "hope" not! Not sure if I believe in that stuff or not. Although I know some homes that are haunted, so....who knows?

No way! I don't believe it.

VickiSims says:

I'm a skeptic, so would need more proof that it is really cursed.

ArtByLinda says:

Naw, I don't believe in that hubba bubba stuff...however, I do believe in Karma...perhaps those that think it is cursed have done bad things in their past!

Written in Bone

This is an exhibit that explores different forensic cases. This picture is a picture of the James Fort skeleton. This skeleton was discovered in 2005. Is it possible that this boy died during an Indian attack in 1607?

This is just one of many forensic cases. Read more forensic files here.

It is so amazing how far we have come and what we can learn from bones.

Blast From the Past

A recently recovered deep-sea core contains convincing new evidence of an asteroid impact 65 million years ago, when dinosaurs went extinct. A section of the core is the centerpiece of a multimedia exhibit, "Blast from the Past," currently on display at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.
