Let me start from the beginning...

I'm a bit of a fat body.

I admit it. I like chicken wings, burgers and my almost daily beer. I fluctuate in weight according to my motivation. Sometimes I'm a workout freak and other times (more often) I enjoy lazing around and being not thin.

This of course translates into problems...

One of which is snoring.

Snoring can put a damper on many things including your health. Here are two other important things snoring can affect:

1. Sex. Try keeping up your significant other up all night with snoring so loud that it makes a chainsaw jealous. It leaves the libido a little lacking and a not-so-happy bed mate. Luckily there are industrial strength ear plugs and white noise machines than can dampen the noise that is emitted from some stellar snorers.

2. Travel with friends.

On a trip a year ago, while battling an impressive snoring saga - I was invited on a road trip with a few friends to New York City to see the Rangers vs. the Leafs. Needless to say, due to the expensive tastes of my buddies we stayed in an upscale hotel right in Times Square. We ended up drinking the first night away in Manhattan. I ended up in the bath tub due to an intolerable cacophony of nasal carols.

Again I was about as welcome as a tick behind a dogs' ear.

Strangely I haven't been invited back.

All joking aside, snoring can and sometimes is a serious health risk. Besides all of the minor or major inconveniences it creates it can also be a sign of sleep apnea.

This is a serious condition that can be fatal and should be properly diagnosed by a doctor.

For those of us that are still breathing (much to the chagrin of our wives/partners), there is a hope.

I have found some free stop snoring remedies to lessen the impact of our nasally-challenged-selves that can improve the quality of sleep you have.

Free Stop Snoring Remedy Sew or clip a sock to the back of your shirt, pajama top. Put a tennis ball in this sock. Sleep uncomfortably on your back until you get fed up and switch positions. This usually does the trick and causes you to stop snoring due to your position.

You can prop your bed up or get a pillow specially designed for us that snore at Olympic levels. Raising the front of your bed approximately 4 inches can make a difference in your snoring potential.

I lit off a firecracker in the bedroom one night and she never even flinched. (just kidding honey..)

True story: I came home absolutely drunk a few months ago. (Not in my usual habit :).

To illustrate - I set off the house alarm and almost had police attend. I promptly undressed at the entrance-way before making my way to bed apologizing in an incoherent blather. I promptly quashed any sympathy points when a I fell asleep on top of the sound machine causing it to overheat and melt a bit. (I kinda believe that's what happened anyways).

Needless to say, I contacted the company with my story and they promptly sent another to us with no questions asked. Apparently this device lasts years and should automatically shut off upon fat guy sleeping on/near it.

The thing is actually pretty good for drowning me out and is also a nice thing to have when traveling when falling asleep can be difficult.

I personally don't have this pillow but I have heard great things about it. I'll probably get one to save my marriage. :P

Currently I use a special pillow for neck support but it's more of a pillow designed for chiropractic needs as opposed to a pillow that stops you from snoring.

If you haven't had any success with the above you can use this as a means to actually work on the muscles in your mouth and throat which are part of the causes of snoring.

Self help solutions to stop snoring

* Adopt a healthy lifestyle to help develop good muscle tone and lose weight.
* Avoid tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and antihistamines before bedtime.
* Avoid alcohol for at least four hours and heavy meals or snacks for three hours before going to bed.
* Establish regular sleeping patterns
* Sleep on your side rather than your back.
* Tilt the head of your bed upwards four inches.

Products to stop snoring:

1. Snore stop. This has worked great for me. Well, great says my wife. This seems to coat properly and despite a somewhat bitter taste it does it's job well. You can find it at most pharmacies for under $20. It's non-habit forming and effective.

2. Stop Snoring Gizmo. This product to stop snoring works well in that it physically prevents you from doing what is necessary to snore. I'm no doctor, but I have to say that it does indeed work. Aside from looking like a donkey it does the trick. It kind of reminds me of an old Three Stooges episode.. anyways..
