I can't believe I did not know about snow fleas before visiting this site. Having lived in Michigan and Minnesota, I'm sure they have been present in my life. Thank you for expanding my horizons. Who would feel it necessary to kill such a harmless creature? I'm glad you discouraged it. I mean, get real! Live and let live.

I have never in my life heard of a snow flea! They should be renamed spring bugs methinks. With thanks and appreciation. Cathi x

Very interesting lens! I often see snow fleas down in the snowy tracks of elk and deer here in the winter--they like the warmth left by the passing animals.

Thanks. It's fun to meet someone who knows about snow fleas. You have an observant eye.

I have not seen snow fleas for so many years that I had almost forgotten about them, I always enjoyed watching them growing up in the north woods. My Dad used to carry it a little farther and told us to watch out for the "snow snakes". Thanks for the sweet memories and I'm leaving a little angel dust to help the snow snakes along, not much snow this year but you may have much more up in your neck of the woods....now that is snow country!

Whoa Deb, loving snow fleas??? OK maybe that's odd, but then we all have certain things people wonder about. I have never heard about these critters and find them fascinating,..as long as they don't get on me or my Kitty and bite...cute and informative lens.

Super interesting! We live in NE GA mountains now, but lived in Indiana for years, never saw a snow flea that I know of. Hey, as long as their not real fleas, I think they could be my friend!
  • DebMartin Dec 1, 2011 @ 7:37 pm | delete
You'll notice this year I'm betting. They are those little black specks on snow on a warm day. Look close, they're moving!
  • OhMe Nov 27, 2011 @ 8:13 pm | delete

I've never seen them before, I live in south Idaho so maybe the desert climate is the problem (though we do get snow in the winter) interesting lens, now at least if I ever do see them, I won't be worried about them getting on me or my fam

So cool. I've learned something new today. :o) If people only knew all the stuff that gets into the food supply. LOL Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Loved this lens.

I discovered snow fleas one sunny day when I was taking my kids out sliding. The snow fleas were filling our footprints. Now I look for them every year.

I've never heard of snow fleas, and am sad that people find it necessary to kill such tiny critters. Do they not realize bug parts are allowed in all commercial food products? I will trade them any day for the real fleas in our southern California backyard.

I grew up in Northern Ontario and did a lot of winter hiking and never noticed snow fleas. Cool, yet kind of gross at the same time.

  • capriliz Dec 23, 2010 @ 11:34 pm | delete
First I ever heard of snow fleas. That would be different cooking them "down" in the maple syrup!

Oh my snow fleas? Gosh, I guess you would expect that especially when YOU can have sand fleas ... you know what I'm saying?
